What alot of people do not understand about Type 2 diabetics is to some it is a considered a secret discretion. Almost like a STD. The don't want people to know about. The do not want to be pited. At the age a type 2 is normally diagnosed most feel they can handle the situation till something happens. they don't want to be a burden on the family.
I spoke to a woman who told me it was a personal choice if a diabetic didn't want to disclose to the family their conditions. She was of an older generation. I tried my best to explain that diabetic is a disease that needs family support and education to be really be healthy. No matter how i explained it just didn't get through to her. If a diabetic is in denial they could risk have limbs amputated and really be a burden on the family. Just didn't get it.
Folks don't understand stand there are some different psychologies at work when you are dealing with people that have been "healthy" and free wheeling then have the rug pulled from underneath you. Type 2's possibly do go looking for support because they try to handle it themselves. type 1's need to take a lesson in empathy.
Yes there are a lot of us T2’s that are just popping pills and go on to eat and do just what they want. There is a group here and all seem to be on the ADA diet and all condemn me for low carbing. So I don’t go. Most are overweight and gaining. Makes me sad and mad at the same time. Sad they don’t take control and mad they don’t take control! Lol. I think T2’s don’t feel they HAVE to control like T1’s do because they are their own pancreas. It’s easier to pop pills than watch what one is doing food and exercise wise. A whole bunch of T2 have no idea the complications that can occur if not controlled. Either that or it won’t happen to them. I agree education would be good at the same time who is going to educate them? ADA? Nutritionalists that prescribe to the ADA? Sigh
Why in the world are my post being attached to the wrong previous post! I was attaching, I thot, to Natalies posts
Sorry Brunetta that it seems to yours. And congratulations on 43 years of control! You go girl!
Now it looks like I’m attached to christalyns. Arrrggggg
LOVE your passion!!! I may not be an African American (except in the sense that we are ALL descended from Africa!!), but I certainly care about minority communities. My Jewish ancestors lived under the same horrible conditions in Europe for many centuries -- how could I not care about the poor and underserved communities here?
I am glad you are being a role-model for your community -- and I hope you do start a group when you retire -- you are much needed!
Hello, fellow Nevadan!! :-) For you, support is even harder, because Winnemucca is a small town, really. And it would be too hard to get to Reno for a support meeting. :-(
Did you know that Danny lives in Las Vegas? That makes 3 Nevadans here as far as I know!
So at least you have TuDiabetes -- I think there is a lot of support here, and I'm enjoying the interaction with people from all over the world!
Different pyschology at work, agree. No one is being unempathic & that's an insulting statement.
T1s also get pity that we don't want. Also, many T1s are diagnosed as adults, many are also misdiagnosed as T2 & given the wrong treatment. Afraid you're under the misconception that it's a childhood thing. I was diagnosed at 53. Talk about the rug being pulled out. You can read here about adults who were diagnosed T1 in their 30's, 40's & 50's.
Zoe, what topics have you had recently? We’ve talked about gyn issues, exercise, carb counting, cure research, dealing with stress, holiday stuff, travelling with diabetes, etc. We get to pick topics as needed, but I really enjoy our unstructured discussion time.
