Curious if there are any diabetics on here that are on disability? And if you don’t mind me being personal stuff like how old you are, how long you’ve been on disability, how hard or easy was it for you to get it, that sort of info. I am 29 and I’ve been trying to get disability for almost two yrs now and I’m waiting for a hearing, I have multiple other health problems caused by my diabetes and just have a day to day struggle as I’ve been diabetic for 24yrs now.
Hi Alesha:
I was on Disability in my late 20’s and 30’s when our Kids were under age. The Disability had nothing to do with Diabetes though, I was dxd. with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s also a progressive Autoimmune disease that attacks parts of the body, like Type 1. I didn’t have depression because of Diabetes but I sure did a couple of years with RA. The pain and fatigue is unreal when the drugs don’t work. My Rheumy just said, “You’re not going back to work, you have enough to look after with your Family”, and signed the papers.
That is kind of where I am at, with all my meds that I am on on top of the diabetes and my eyes are really bad and we haven’t seemed to be able to fix them either (I barely smudged past the vision test for my drivers license) and all the trauma my pregnancy caused to my body it’s very hard tor me to get through the day with a child let alone get through a whole day of work and stress with meds that make me very sleepy and then come home and do toddler duty it’s just not happening.
How hard was it for you to get your disability though? Did you have to go clear through to a hearing? or were you able to get it by just applying the first time? And if you don’t mind me asking what do you do now? and how long ago was it that you were on disability?
Hi:
I’ll tell you right now. If your Dr. signed the papers, then do not take No for an answer with Disability. Just keep calling them, you’ll eventually run across the right Person who knows what’s going on. I had to call 3 times. The first 2 People said, “No, you don’t qualify” and they gave me false info. It was a Really Nice Lady the third time(3rd time’s a charm) I called who said, “Yes, you definitely qualify”.
I could barely walk so the Lady came came to my home to do a Home Study(asked a ton of questions. Had to get info about my CPP, our total income, etc.).
And if you don’t mind me asking what do you do now? and how long ago was it that you were on disability?
Sorry, I’m not sure what you are exactly asking in the first question. As far as the second question, less than 10 years.
I just meant to ask if you are working now? You said you were on disability while you had underage kids, just wondered if you were working now?
Oh, okay. No. You get worse with RA, not better. There is no cure. I’m a guinea(sp) pig, as usual, trying to see if any of these new drugs will work for me. I usually have a couple decent days a week. I do feel better this week but it’s probably the Better weather. I’m on 4 different drugs for RA. I started another new drug in December, so my Rheumy and I are hoping that it’s starting to work. I look after stuff here and since my Hubby was in a bad accident last summer, I was looking after him. I had also done volunteer work before, so I’d like to get back into some more occasionally.
