Do you live in Indiana? Please Read if You Take Human Non-Analogue Insulin

On July 1, 2014 Indiana became the first state to require that all insulin sold there to have a valid prescription from a physician. This change does not impact analogue insulin like Humalog, Novolog, Lantus, or Levemir which already require a valid prescription in order to be sold anywhere in the United States. Now though, in Indiana unlike every other state, you must also have a prescription for other forms of human insulin like those carrying a Regular or R, NPH, 50/50 mix or 70/30 mix designation on the vial or pen. Today, the FDA does not require a prescription for these types of insulin but Indiana's legislature with support from the Governor pushed for the law. Again, this change only applies to people living in Indiana. The reasons behind the new law are unclear but it is expected implementation of the law will cause widespread confusion especially for senior citizens, those with lower incomes and others who do not use analogue insulin and will now need to obtain prescriptions each time they purchase their insulin.

Emily,

Indiana's legislature with support from the Governor pushed for the law.

This is called 'passing a law'. It is what legislatures and governors do under their state's constitution. "Pushing" for a law is different..it is what lobbyists and advocates do (including our own DOC/PWD advocates).

The reasons behind the new law are unclear but it is expected implementation of the law will cause widespread confusion especially for senior citizens, those with lower incomes and others who do not use analogue insulin and will now need to obtain prescriptions each time they purchase their insulin.

You found out about this from somewhere. Please tell us where. Somewhere else, someone presumably knows why the people who passed the law actually passed it, or at least the claimed reasons. That would be interesting to know (I personally think all forms of insulin, pumps, and CGMs should be available without prescription). "It is expected"...someone expects. Who? Why? Expectation is not a natural force, like weather.
