I just got a notice from my insurance company that Semglee will replace Lantus on the drug list, “The next time you go to fill Lantus, your pharmacist should already know to replace your prescription with Semglee (similar to when you get a generic instead of a brand-name medicine).”
They also note that “Lantus will be subject to utilization management or require non-formulary review.” Sounds like big brother is not giving me much choice (without a lot of hassle). I’m curious to hear from anyone who has used Lantus, and switched to Semglee–good? bad? indifferent?
Semglee is approved to be a direct replacement for Lantus and I think you should give it a try with an open mind.
We all claim that we want reduced drug prices and for that to happen we may be looking at generics and biosimilars. We can’t keep insisting on the high-priced name brand drugs if there are acceptable alternatives.
My suggestion is to log your current blood sugars and then continue once you start Semglee. If you can’t get the new insulin to work, hopefully your doctor will file a formulary exemption for you.
But to answer your question, I have not used Semglee although I used Basaglar and Lantus interchangeably with no issues.
