Does Tresiba hurt to inject?

Hi all,

I have had diabetes since birth (47 years). I have been on Lantus but insurance is forcing me to switch to Tresiba. I know it is strange, but even after all these years I am scared to death of injections. Needless to say, I am worried about the switch.

With Lantus, I would put the needle in the skin and then dial the medicine in very slowly. Even as slow as I went, I would still sometimes get a bubble under the skin. From what I can tell from Tresiba, it shoots in very quickly. It seems like this will hurt and cause even more bubbles.

I would love anybody’s experience on what it felt like and what I can expect. I am so scared. Thanks in advance!!

Hi trggirl,

Tresiba does have an automatic pusher, but thus far I have had no issues injecting into either fat or muscle. I take 80 units daily and generally inject all at once in the same spot. If I start running out of real estate because of bruises, etc, and decide to use muscle, I split the dose and inject in 2 areas at the same time of day. I don’t get the burn I used to get from Lantus either.

Personally I much prefer Tresiba to Lantus. Minimal spike, 35+ hour tail, no stacking, and I can vary the time of my dose if needed (though I rarely do). My basals are much more in control with Tresiba than they ever were with Lantus or NPH.

Even though switching can be scary, I think you might actually like Tresiba ( at least I hope you like it as much as I do). Have a great day!

I have been raising my dosage weekly of it and I’m at 30 units daily. I have both u100 and u200 pens and neither of them hurt and I take the whole dose in one shot. The pens do inject quite fast, on the u100 its just over 1 second.

Wow El Ver, it can inject 80units in just a second or two and it doesn’t hurt? That is amazing.

Everything I am reading about Tresiba makes me excited. I just need to get through the first one. I have a history of passing out from the fear. I am hoping that does not happen but it has happened many times in the past the first few times I try something. The fear is huge which really is crazy since I have been getting shots and doing finger sticks all my life.

Thank you Jeff G1. My dose is 30 units as well.

trggirl https://forum.tudiabetes.org/u/trggirl,

I completely understand about that. I actually crashed on Lantus shortly
after starting it because I didn’t account for the longer tail (I was
transitioning from NPH). Not the way I prefer to do a medical benefits
check, lol. I love the fact that Tresiba doesn’t stack, and I feel that
much more secure if I need to change a dosing time for either Tresiba or my
bolus. I and actually see the bolus line on my CGM at night if I have
managed to get my mealtime sugars in check first. It is incredibly flat.
In fact, the first 3 weeks I was on Tresiba my sugars overall were flat -
very little variation for meals. Now that I have been taking it or + 8
months, I see all the mealtime spikes again. Of all the insulins I have
used to date, Tresiba is my absolute favorite! I am currently using the
U200, which is the same as Lantus unit for unit, but somehow has less
volume?. Not sure about ALL the specifics, but I did not change my dose
when I switched from Lantus except for the first several days.

Yes its half the volume for the U200.
U100 300 units per pen
U200 600 units per pen

I had trouble understanding at first. 30 units on one is 30 units on the other. Only time its different is if you use a syringe and vial which Tresiba doesn’t come in.

Found the post of the member here truenorth that explained it to me.

Makes perfect sense! Thank you Jeff_G1.
