Dr. Eric Berg

I just started doing intermittent fasting. I am liking the overall effects thus far after 2 weeks. I started looking at videos by Dr. Eric Berg which make alot of sense to me since I am exhibiting some of the same symptoms he talks about. I am liking his idea of eating 2 meals a day and how starch and protein will spike insulin levels. This is something I have being saying for a while.

I am a little concerned that he is a chiropractor and not an Endo or an MD. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am wondering how do other people feel about his videos and his advice? Are other MD’s critical or give credence.

I am EXTREMELY dubious of any chiropractor who prominently calls himself a “Dr” without noting they are actually PhD’s of chiropractic. In the case of this particular quack, he appears on quackwatch.com as having been reprimanded and fined by the Virginia board of medicine for selling bogus muscle tests and other useless crap. It sounds like his response to that was to move onto selling advice on fasting and keto that is readily available from others for free. https://quackwatch.org/cases/board/chiro/berg/

If you are interested in keto and IF, you would be better off listening to actual medical doctors who promote the diets. There are plenty of those around. Just my opinion.

I have no knowledge of this person. I would say, like I usually do, if it works for you, try it.
I do not do low carb or any type of diet modification. I eat what I want , when I want with an eye always on my CGM. I have talked with my medical team about fasting and low carb. The answer is the same, if I want to try it, there are smart ways to do it. I have never gotten push back for trying new things but there needs to be a solid medical plan behind any change that could cause blood sugar issues.
So I would say, ask your medical team how to safely do this. They should be able to help you here and if not, find someone else. My team always has a preferred treatment plan but I have never been denied something I want to try. I do my research, I ask questions and than ask the team.
If you are currently using this treatment plan and it is working and you can handle the outcomes when things swing one way or the other, than keep going. It’s your decision what treatment plan you use, as long as it’s safe with solid backing. Good luck and I am a big fan of trying to find what works best for you.

Well, he is not a physician so I would take his advice with a grain of salt.
It’s a lot like the people on this site, I know no one is a doctor, unless they state they are. Everyone has an opinion.
A lot of times we diabetics know a lot of things docs don’t know due to lack of personal experience.

So maybe he has a good suggestion, but don’t use that to replace a psysicans care, please. !

Over time, if a forum is frequented enough and time is spent reading the questions asked and responses given, a clear pattern forms of the intelligent, experienced, and compassionate efforts of some towards others.

I am using intermittant fasting also, I eat several P3 snacks and one meal per day. I have a bag of salad and a bag of diced chicken. I vary my dressing. See pix. I am also changing my workout pattern. I use TRX (the real one) and resistance bands.

I would ditch anyone who is not professionally published in peer-reviewed or juried professional journals. Dr Eric Berg is neither. A quick check of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health found nothing. I am therefore, dubious of anything he would say absent publication in professional literature.

thank you. just to play devils advocate… i did look at the quack board. Nothing on it was recent or pertained to diabetes or the current role he is doing. Which is interesting…

@Jay6 Yes I am interested in IF especially if it is another T2 diabetic. Do you find that coffee in general spikes your levels? I am dubious also especially when other Dr.s are saying thing slightly different. I lost weight about 3 years ago and it was some what easy. This time around trying to loose these pandemic rolls of fat has been more challenging. I do remember going to gym at least 4 times a week and being a strict vegan. I am liking the fasting for 12-15 hours a day where I only drink water. It is working for me. My friend says I need to try 24 hours. Any advise is appreciated!!!

@Jsgarden I remember Steven Wright from the 80s. I always thought he was so funny as a kid. I remember him doing a show in LV at least a decade ago…

@Sally7 It is this fear of wanting to do the best for yourself without hurting yourself in the process. I am not looking at myself and I know I didn’t really try hard on alot of things. Right now it seems like the weight is extremely subborn to take off where it wasn’t about 4 years ago. I am much older and experiencing life changes. IF is interesting to me and I have been doing it for 2 week now and I am seeing some benefit in this.

Yes, I have been a fan for years, though never have seen him perform live. I have always loved comedy that makes me look at common and familiar things and experiences in a different way.

@Christalyn , I am a T2D. I have used a Dexcom & pump for 20+ years. Cardiology put me on IF earlier. You have asked some questions.

Do you find that coffee in general spikes your levels? Yes. The rationale is caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and provokes the liver to release glucose via gluconeogenisis.

The style of IF I am using is 8/16. I eat P3 snacks or eat a ham/cheese omelette and the salad. If I eat the omelette, there is no chicken in the salad. All food is between 11am & 7pm.

My plan is to decrease my gut. Because I have increased muscle mass and waist circumference by an inch I am shying away from scales.

@Nancy50 I take lots of meds and supplements… I just take them toward the evening when I have eaten.
