Earthquake

About 20 minutes ago we had a bad earthquake. I’ve felt a lot of quakes in Hawaii but don’t remember any this strong. A dish fell off my nightstand.

We turned on the radio, they said it might be a pre-shock of a larger one to come. I’m safe here in my room which is really an enclosed lanai on the rear of the house. Even if the house fell down I would probably be OK.

Dear Lord I do hope you will be okay… Ive had my share of earthquakes too and even if it happens so many times, nobody will ever get use to it.

I live in West TN and the last really bad one formed Reelfoot Lake here in the early 1800’s I don’t know what I would do if the earth started moving under me!

I was on the webcam with my mom she lives near Palm Springs in La Quinta. My stomach stills feels sick watching her run.

They say it was only a 3.2 but it felt big to me. I had a plate on my nightstand and it shook it off.

Diane - did your mom feel the quake too?

oh no… what time did this happen? I didn’t feel anything here in oceanside

It was 10:53 Wednesday night. I really felt here in La Jolla. It was centered near Borrego Springs No damage here but it scared me and shook a dish off my night table.

when we lived in CA, there were many earthquakes. you must be prepared with food and water. also, keep an old pair of shoes under your bed. if a really bad one comes at night, and you must get out, you’ll need to put on shoes quickly (a friend of mine started doing this after a big one hit, and there was broken glass all over the floor of her house). mentally, think about where you can go in each room when it starts to shake - a doorway is good, away from glass windows and large furniture and bookcases that might fall on your head. I’m sure the tv today will remind people of what they need to know to be prepared.

i hope there is no more >< I can deal with hurricanes and typhoons, but earthquakes scare me more for some reason…

I’ve lived here for just over a year and there have been about 5 earthquakes that I’ve felt. The biggest one was on Easter day. It shook for almost 30 seconds, the longest EQ I’ve ever felt. The one yesterday was over quickly.

When I lived at home I was more afraid of tsunamis than earthquakes. When there was a tsunami watch we always kept the radio on for the latest information. My dad told me the spot where our house sits was overrun by tsunami waves in the 1957. We had a box of stuff we would have taken with us if one was going to hit. We didn’t have to go very far, just up the hill where could have watched the waves hit.

I always has a big supply of insulin when I lived at home. Here I usually only have a partial box each of Novolog and Levemir pens; and a vial or 2 of the Novolog I use in my pump. If there was a really bad earthquake where the power went out for an extended time and I ran out of insulin it could be bad. Maybe I should start to plan for that.

Its a little unsettling, particularity when they come in the middle of the night and wake you up. They always say its a precursor to a larger event. Ya, someday we will drop into the ocean, but that could 10K years from now. Fortunately it doesn’t sound like there was any significant damage with this one.

I’ve never been in an earthquake that did any damage near me. The Easter Day earthquake was a 7.2, but it was far enough from us that it did no damage.

At home we always feared earthquakes in the Aleutian Islands because that is what caused the bad tsunamis. Lucky there wasn’t any in my life time.
