How do you bolus for an earthquake?

No kidding, we just had one in DC and we were evacuated from my office building. BG shot up to 248!!! I know it wasn’t what I had for lunch today, or even a result of the low this morning because too much time has passed. This always happens to me when I get nervous or scared about anything - my BG shoots through the roof.

Anyone else have this happen? Just found it somewhat amusing. Made me think, “So, how does one bolus for an earthquake?”

I live in Ocean City, NJ, and I just woke up to the whole house shaking!!! I was like WTF?

Well, before I could bolus for I would need to know that it actually happened. I am in PA and was sitting here working on something and heard some strange noises from the kitchen - I thought someone had rattled the back door. I was actually afraid to go look but did go into the kitchen and nothing was wrong nor was anyone outside. My sister called and asked me if my house shook & to turn on the news. I guess I did feel it but just didn’t know I did.

How many carbs are in an earthquake? Haven’t had one in Seattle since my dx so I guess I’ll just wait for the next one to find out.

Ha, my bg was 65 before lunch so I decided to bolus after I got done eating rather than before. But just as I was finishing lunch up the whole building was shaking and rattling and a couple things even fell off the shelves.Just got back in from the mandatory evacuation, haven’t taken my bolus yet, and my bg is… 126.

It was not a small one, I would guess it was smaller than Northridge but somewhere closer to the epicenter a lot of older buildings probably fell down and maybe some highway bridges.

Did you take your supplies with you or just leave? I just said that if I had to leave in a hurry, I would be in trouble.

I was just talking to FatCatAnna in FB and her father was worried about her brother working in DC. She said that he rides his bike to work between DC & VA and he wouldn’t have a problem unless there was a problem with the bridge.

I went up to central, found out they were OK in there, then I went out the front door. I had my meter in my pants pocket and my lunch bolus in my shirt pocket but those were there before the quake

At this moment all the roads are completely clogged because a lot of US Government buildings are shut down for the day. I’m waiting till after the evening rush to go home. A bike sounds like a good idea

Maybe I had the opposite? BG was holding steady at 96 pre-quake and is now 64. Good news though - there were still cupcakes in the break room after we were able to reenter our building

There’s a monster hurricane coming up the coast too…

So you were reading to leave!

If everyone else leaves now, hopefully you won’t have a problem getting home. I lived down there when the plane hit the bridge & there was a subway crash that same day. My office closed early that day and it took me over 5 hours to get home walking a big portion of the way.

Those cupcakes knew you would be low and need one!

The official report is-- the quake was a 5.9 and was centered near Charlottesville, VA. There doesn’t appear to be any significant damage any where. I am in PA, near Philly, and we felt it here. The experts say there could be some aftershocks in the next hours, days, or weeks. It didn’t effect my BS at all.

Felt it in NY too…WOW.
Yes, I go sky high when I get an adrenaline rush from fear. I give myself a correction of 1/2 what I would if it was a “real” high, bc after the rush, it’ll start coming down on its own, too…
Glad you’re ok…we had a little 2.2 in Albany NY before the 6.0 in VA…felt the ripples from the 6.0 much more.

Love the title, but sorry to hear your bgs went up so high!! Me, I would take about 1.5 units to correct for that high, which would bring me down to about 100 (maybe lower, since it IS transient). On my way to Philly in the next few minutes, so will give this some more thought while on the turnpike.

Felt it and heard it here in Harrisburg, too. Was quite weird!!

yep, they were providential cupcakes!

Yeah, I would be much more worried about that! As someone who lived in the SF Bay Area and Guatemala, I’m sorry but I can’t help but be amused at how strongly people on the east coast are reacting to a 5.9 earthquake! We’re used to just looking up and saying, “oh, we’re having an earthquake, cool.” I was in the bay area during the 1989 “pretty big one”. I was totally jazzed by it until I started hearing people were hurt and killed and then I stopped thinking it was fun.

Oh yes, and when I lived in Guatemala I was always hoping one of the volcanoes would erupt! I lived far enough away not to be in danger. The most I saw was some sparks shooting up into the sky one night and I was jazzed for days!

But I’m weird like that. As a kid living on the east coast I always hoped the hurricanes would hit and was disappointed when they bypassed us. I’ve been in two floods neither of which my life was threatened and thought they were amazing! I guess I just like weather.

I liked the title of this post too!

Bite your tongue! I don’t remember needing to bolus when that last one hit Seattle. Same for the few I enjoyed in California, no bolus necessary. I like the “How many carbs are in an earthquake question”, it cracked me up

Hahaha, great question! I was treating a low when the earthquake happened (I live like 35-40 miles from DC) and I thought it was some new freaky low BG symptom for a second. It didn’t seem to affect my BG too much because I pretty much thought “Oh, an earthquake, that’s kinda cool” and didn’t really react to it, but it did give me a headache! What a strange day!

I didn’t feel it over here in TN but I bet it put a major panic in you. I got to say when something stressful happens to me I tend to shoot up really fast. I wouldn’t even start to tell you how to bolus for that!
