My head is spinning and looks like I have half hour with our only endo in town. I know I need to be on a fast acting insulin but is there anything else I should go over? I’m writing my questions down and feel a little overwhelmed with it all.
I assume you are newly diagnosed.
If so, what you will need at this stage is training and education. This is normally carried out by nursing staff rather than by the Endo in person. You should expect sessions to train you in the basics such as how to inject and test your BG, carb-counting, how to deal with exercise/activity, what to do if you are sick etc…
In some clinics, newly diagnosed T1s often get put onto “simplified” fixed dose regimes (sometimes called things like sliding scale). Talk to your endo about starting on MDI (multiple daily injections) as soon as possible. This involves taking 1 or 2 shots per day of long acting insulin plus rapid analog insulin with food (based on carb counting). Longer term., you might want to check out pumps.
Good luck
Joel
My advice would be to ask about getting a CGM as soon as possible.
Asked for a CMG. he said no problem. My insurance may not cover it since my c peptide is so high. Same for the pump. But going to call insurance tomorrow. Nurse helping me has type one too so she was amazing. My sugars were good today so it was a great day. Got short acting and a lot of info. I feel better and finally feel more in control. Thanks for your advice.
