Check this out:

Just tune in to what people say. The new common noise word buzz-phrase is:
Do you know what?

or the short form
You know what?

You know what? since I noticed this phenomenon it's been driving me out of my tree.
No I don't know until you damn well tell me. I'm not a mind reader!

Alan, so often I wish people could hear an instant replay of their conversation!! I work with several young people, all of whom are college-educated and in a professional environment... yet, every third word is "like," and it makes me like crazy! ARRGHH!

I recall a time when reading was considered a good method of improving diction; it would be great to see someone publish a book using the catch-phrase du jour. Perhaps then, the usage might diminish?

OH boy. There are so many verbal tropes in common usage that drive me right up the wall, I don't know where to begin the list. Here's one: "irregardless". Here's another: "if you will". I could go on. And on. And on . . .

Here's a favorite for me, David -- "hot water heater"

I worked with 2 guys.
One used to prefix every sentence with "From my perspective..."
The other with "Correct me if I am wrong..."
UGH

Had a conversation with someone who mentions "Oh my God" before and after every sentence...I thought God will come down from the heavens saying What??!!

Thanks for reminding me, Alan. I once knew someone who began every sentence with, "Let me put it to you this way . . ."

Wasn't very long before I really wanted to put it to him, my way.

How about, "no offense, but..." and the always popular "you know?"

No big deal , because I belong :) us lovely Canadians , who say ..." eh " after every thing, any thing ?? What I think in MHO is not appropiate : to call me and Hubby " Guys " ...it happens and happens and happens in the USA , in Canada ...then I conclude ...there are much worse things that " they " can call me ...PS I am from the " older school "

David - thanks for reminding me of "irregardless".
There's no such word! Who invented that one?

One that really makes me want to scream is "any ways".
That is just bad grammar. You always use the singular form with the word "any".
Please start saying "any way", or better still, don't say it at all. It's redundant.

The one that irks me is the TV host introducing some one as "Let's give it up for.....". Give up what???? Arhhhhh

omg, guys, I'm guilty of a few of these informally.

But NEVER

"irregardless" which just grates on ears like fingernails on a chalkboard every time I hear it, I cringe every time I hear

"between you and I "
never ever correct

and I really hate it when cooks on tv say "reduce it down" it's repetitiously redundant

anyway, maybe you can get me to stop saying "anyway", anyway you can.

HOW ABOUT ( he didn't did it ) or i didn't went
etc...

Let me axe you a question . . . after all, axing the question is a perequisite to getting an answer . . .

lol

let's not make fun of other people. they axe because they can't say it another way.look it up.

still loling

Shoshana, that's true of some, not others. I know people who say it that way deliberately because they think it's cute, or trendy, or something. But your point is well taken.

Oh, here's one that REALLY sends me straight up the wall: "nucular"

thanks, david (dns)
