T2 Diabetic. Just started Toujeo in December. Fasting Sugars went from above 220+ to 170. Changing the units from 10 to 20 allowed my BG to drop again from 170 to 140.
Three months later, my doctor wants me to try Farxiga to "deal with the blood sugar in my blood stream that can be passed through the urine and also to help with weight loss. I am noticing some sharp pains that were not there before… Is it me or does it appear as if once you start taking additional meds, additional problems start to manifest or were they there all along?
I’ve never used one of the Farxiga-class drugs (the ones that dump excess glucose through the kidneys), but every medication has side effects. Sometimes they’re negligible, sometimes serious. And some individuals experience them while others don’t. The only reliable guide is personal experience.
You might want to stop the Farxiga and see whether the symptoms stop too. But discuss it with your doctor, don’t do it cold turkey. That could provide a pretty good indication of whether the symptoms are caused by the drug, or are just coincidental.
I am on Farxiga and it does have some side effects which could explain sharp pains. Drugs like Farxiga (the SGLT2 drugs) increase your risk of urinary tract infections although the risk is not significant in men. These drugs can also cause you to become dehydrated so if you are at risk of kidney stones you might have a kidney stones. I have kidney stone issues so I take special care to stay hydrated.
No medication is totally safe. But I would tell you that for many these SGLT2 drugs work great. They decrease your fasting blood sugars, decrease your insulin doses and they help you lose weight. I would urge you to let your doctor know that you are having sharp pains right away. That isn’t normal and is cause for concern.
Well, I must say that I am not taking he Farxiga right now. I have noticed that the sharp pains that I experienced, I have not had since I stopped taking the Farxiga (I only took it for two days, y’all!)
It also had caused me some distress with regards to going to the bathroom. I started to have incontinence issues. What I have done instead is increased my activity amount at least every other day. With state testing, I could not see me interrupting the testing session too frequently because I had to go to the restroom or because I needed to change my clothing… As a result, I refrained from taking the medication.
My wife and I currently walk about 2.25 miles every other day for 3 times a week. My blood sugars tested at 124 on Thursday morning when the Wednesday before it was at 144.
So far so good. Will continue to monitor food intake/sweets and try to find a better time to eat a snack as opposed to just before bed… Anyway, peace!
