It’s been a while since I’ve posted and I thank my friends who helped me with Covid vaccine troubles. My med. student daughter told me about Fiasp. It has allowed me to achieve better control (MDI) than anything I have used in 54 years, including a pump. The problem: Our insurance company will not cover Fiasp. Does anyone know whether Medicare covers Fiasp?
Thanks,
Sue
I assume that you are using injections currently and your insulin is covered under your Part D drug plan or through an Advantage plan. Or you will be new to Medicare? You will have to shop plans to find one that covers Fiasp.
As someone who uses a tubed pump, my insulin is covered through Part B DME. Fiasp is covered through Part B as are all other short-acting insulins. Part D plans and Advantage plans have formularies.
As one looks to 2023 and a supposed $35 monthly cap for each insulin subscription for people on Medicare, my guess is that most plans will have limited and tight formularies. Fiasp and Lyumjev tend to be more expensive than other insulins and it may be hard to find coverage for them. TBD…
I had a Medicare Advantage plan earlier this year (Humana Gold Plus) that covered Fiasp, with $35 copay. For various reasons I switched to a Medigap and a Part D prescription plan. I could not find a Part D plan that covered Fiasp so I switched to Lyumjev which is covered (so far) and seems to be equal to Fiasp.
FYI I use Omnipid so my insulin comes via Part D.
Thank you, John.
Hi, Laddie,
I will be new to Medicare. It sounds as though I should stick wit my husband’s commercial insurance a few years longer.
Thanks,
Sue
My husband still works but it wasn’t an option for me to continue on his commercial insurance. I do fine with Medicare but it was initially a lot of work to figure out the best plan and suppliers for my situation.
So I am learning! Thanks.
