Hi all! I called my doctor today because I keep having pain at the spots where I wear my OmniPod. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and costochondritis, so I’m afraid these may be interfering with my OmniPod usage.
Lately (about the last four weeks), I’ve found several sore spots that feel like a sunburn almost but itch too. However, when I go to scratch those areas (including one on top of my head), it hurts like &%$#@, so today I called my doc - we both agreed that I could take off my 'Pod today (it was time for a new 'Pod anyway) and see him in his office. I’ve tried everything to regain the comfort levels I had when I first started using the 'Pod about three months ago, but nothing has worked. I changed insulins about two months ago, but if I give my injections via syringe, I have no reaction whatsoever to the insulin - so I think that rules out insulin allergies - unless the amount I took each day via basal and boluses just pushed it over the line…
I went and purchased Benadryl tablets and Eucerin Calming Itch-Relief lotion today. I also purchased a spray called “911” for the burning sensations. The burning and itching has died down some already, but I have a “pop knot” where my cannula was at, which is typical every time I change 'Pods out. On my stomach where I used to wear my 'Pods, it is super sore to the touch and feels like it’s sunburned only from the inside out.
I’m unsure if this has anything to do with my fibro - my doc said something about giving me a cortisone injection and a Medrol DosePak tomorrow when I go to see him. I’m just curious if there are any other pumpers out there that have FM and/or CFS who have had these problems - and if so, can you please comment and tell me your solution? I love my OmniPod - it simplified so much - but right now, the side effects just aren’t worth it to me… Thanks in advance for your comments and help - I’ll let you know our plan of action after seeing the doctor tomorrow.
Wow, I also wear the omnipod and would hate to give it up. I hope you can find the answer. It sounds like you are having a horrible time. My prayers are with you.
I have fm but thankfully none of those issues! I’m on a medtronic pump and haven’t had any issues with the cannula either. It does sound like you have an allergy to the cannal and I have no clue what your other options are for cannals. What is your warrenty for your pump? Can you get your money back if need be? Do different companies make different cannals or are they all made from one and them farmed out under the company? (medtronic or Omipod, etc) I know I’m not being very helpful telling all the things I don’t have problems with…but the fm I can relate to. I’ve had it from severe to not too bad for the past 16 years. It started with a car accident and also the death of my mom being a month earlier. Some things that I’ve found helpful: good organic vitamins, especially magnesium and calcium, hot baths with sea salt, medication (now I take codeine contin), low stress. A goodnights sleep is essential as well. I’ve spent tons of money on lots of natural stuff, massage, physio, etc and finally I did a hair analysis and it explained alot of why I was feeling so horrible. I am now on some new vitamins and I am hoping it will balance my absorbtion and I’ll start feeling better. With my levels so off, it explains why I feel so “off”. I think there is a group for fm sufferers as well. I had to go onto codeine because the pain was spiking my blood sugars and now that the pain is under better control, my sugars are better. How is your fm? How does it affect you? How long have you had it? Lisa
Thanks for the prayers - I need all I can get.
Lisa - I hate that I’ve had these problems, but with my doc’s approval, I’m taking a 10 day break and just using daily injections instead of the pod. I hate to admit it, but I feel so much better already! I’ve begun going to a new chiro for my FM pain and changed a few meds. I’m just ready for relief for any amount of time, lol. My doc will reassess me next week, and I’ll see where I go from there. Like you, I take good quality supplements along with my meds - and my FM started with a car wreck and putting my grandmother in the nursing home while my parents, little brother and niece were going through a category 3 hurricane…
Can you fill me in on the hair analysis? I’ve never heard about that…
