Food for thought

I was just reading on a lab website that you should not have the antibody testing done if you are already on insulin, because it will elevate the antibodies…kinda wonder if that affected mine,

I am not sure it affects the GAD anti-bodies, but I was told it will affect the IAA test.

Interesting…well then I guess my ICA and IA-2 will not be accurate. Just had that done Monday.

It won’t effect your ICA… everyone who injects insulin develops IA-2

There are actually four antibody tests. The three “core” autoimmune tests GAD65, ICA and IA-2 test for an autoimmune reaction to beta cells. The fourth, Insulin Autoantibodies (IAA) are antibodies to insulin. This is an immune reaction to insulin , as opposed to beta cells. It is pretty rare to have an autoimmune reaction to natural insulin, but it can be part of the overal autoimmune effect. More commonly, when you are on external insulin, the foreign insulin will generate some level of immune response and result in IAA. The modern analog insulins are after all not natural. Does that make sense?

Yeah it does. I was just uncertain about what would happen with the other test. Thanks as always BSC!
