I’m a non medicated diabetic. So food is my method of control.
Foods that work for me.
Fresh and Cooked cabbage
Lean meats, chicken, fish, eggs
Fresh and steamed Veg
Beans, green beans
Salads
I always look to see what the carbs say on the label and the servicing size and if I choose to eat it I only take the serving size or less as part of my meal.
I’m not worried about salt, fat, or any of the lies the medical establishment tells us about not eating this or that. It was simple carbs (as recommended by the Food Pyramid) and sugar that got me into this mess… so… I’m not eating those things. And honestly I don’t miss them at all.
If you can control your diabetes with healthy eating - then great stuff! I basically eat the same way as you do - but have been diabetic since age 6 - did go on a bender for awhile with all the “bad” stuff - but smartened up in my 30’s - and now cook pretty well all my meals - make my own bread - but I still “treat” myself to something decadent once in awhile.
So, you don’t eat carbs at all - e.g. fruits, breads, pasta, rice - or do you just take a smaller portions of it? That’s what I’m doing now - trying to cut back on carbs (need to lose some weight) - so I slice my bread thinner - so it’s only about 15g for a slice - and have a smaller portion of pasta/rice of about 20-25g - along with lots of steamed veggies and protein.
My carbs come from fresh foods, fruits (mostly berries and Veg) I look for high fiber to carb ratio or things that have say 5 carbs but a large serving vs something that’s 5 carbs per tbsp.
NO corn, pasta, rice, potatos, or bread … even small amounts of those things shoot up my BG and it stays higher for a couple days. However I do on occasion slice bread thinner and do inside out sandwiches but only rarely.
Darling Husband bought me chocolate cherries for Valentines. 1 is like 5 carbs and mostly sugar. I froze those babies. Out of sight out of mind. Perhaps later this year I’ll take one and whiz it up with some vanilla yogurt or sugar free pudding and have a “special” treat. Otherwise it’s gelatine with fruit or pudding with nuts.
The guides I see all say to have 3 servings of carbs per meal. I say bull pucky. I might have 1 serving (15 grams) per meal…unless it’s all green, live carbs…then I might have more… and since December 22, I’ve lost 42lbs.
See the problem is the food pyramid is not quite right for us… we should double the dairy and protein… and reduce the breads and grains. Honestly I don’t miss all the bread… for the most part.
Go try to find a book called “The power of protein” it’s written by two M.D.s and will really open your eyes. Wanna get rid of glucose and lower cholesterol? Eat meat and dairy… all the stuff they have been telling us for years is bad for us. The book is based on sound scientific studies
Thanks for the information Sylvia…I’ll definately get that book to read. I’m not a big bread eater, never have been but do get carbs in other stuff. I find most difficult time is at night gapping out watching TV…trying to figure out what to eat that won’t send my BS rocketing before bed. I’m T2 on 2/1000g Metformin 2X per day…and can’t seem to get my overnight BS down.
Ok… so. what are you eating in the evening? Are you sure you are not thirsty instead of hungry? I missed the crunch of chips and popcorn. So I ate pickles, celery, almonds instead of chips. Then instead of cookies… ate gelatin.
I did notice that the more days that I did with out allowing my BG to climb above 150 the lower my next number was. Now most times I get a morning number of around 110 or less. So the tighter control you have during the day the lower the morning number appears to be… at least thats the way it worked for me.
Most night’s I try not to eat at all after supper. But if I do it’s usually 1 pc of celery cut in half with about 1 tbsp of Peanut Butter ( 5 carbs) or some Walnuts (4 carbs)…ha, ha just thinking all these games on TuD…how do you know you’re a Diabetic…when every time you talk about food you relate to it in Carbs. Thanks for your suggestions
LOL yeah… I just bugged out over this woman saying that carbs were healthy. “No they aren’t healthy… nor Healthful for that matter.” In that book the power of protein it tells you how much “disguised” sugar is in the typical American diet… following the food pyramid. … 6 CUPS A DAY!!
Made me go holy karma… no wonder I was fat, cranky, and having problems.
Recently hubs went to get his Blood Pressure Medicine script renewed… he’d been off the med for a couple days until he could get in. … Now he has been following the same diet I have… (loveing every bit of it too… except he missed potatoes) and Guess what? NO LONGER HAS … HBP!! NO MORE MEDS. whoa!
