just wondering…i have graves disease for which i was treated w/ radio active iodine back in 1987. it slowly killed my thyroid gland, and about a year after the treatment i was put on a mild dose of synthroid. over the years my dosage increased. not significantly, but enough to compensate for my “dying” thyroid (radio active iodine takes a long time for its full effects to take place). anyway, in the past year, my dosage has had to be **decreased.**i don’t understand why, despite my endo’s unhelpful and vague responses to my questions. if my thyroid has been decintagrating over the years, what would cause a need for less replacement therapy? it just seems very odd to me.
has anyone else on synthroid (thyroxin) had such an experience or have a reasonable explanation to this peculiar occurrence?
creative ideas welcome
I’m on Levothyroxine and about a 18 months ago had a dosage reduction and have remained at this lower level since then. I wonder whether it has to do with the reduction of other hormones in the body due to age. I’ll be 51 this month and I was perimenopausal when the decrease occurred.
I have Hashimoto’s disease. I recently had to have my Synthroid reduced. My endo explained that it was like due to hormonal changes.
i am 51 also, and it wasn’t until these past 2 years that my dosage has been reduced. i have been post-menopausal for about 4 years now. hormonal, who knows. but that could be it. i also had some medication changes in the past 1 1/2 yrs and i am just guessing that that might be playing a part in it.
how old are you if you don’t mind my asking? are you going through menopause yet?
I started taking some generic of Synthroid when I was 14. About a year later I was completely taken off of it with normal blood test results for almost 10 years. I can only assume that hormones and puberty had something to do with it, but who knows. I try not to question too many things that my body does and just roll with it.

:)Yep menopausal. That is for sure the culprit. I’ve found that menopause comes with all kinds of surprises.
peri- menopause and menopause were a D nightmare for me. BGs up, down, up down. non-stop sweats till i was soaked night and day.obgyn wanted me on HRT; that proved a complete disaster. managing my D was near impossible. i don’t think that my synthroid needed adjustment, but it might have actually helped. who knows?
