Funny Taste?

This may be a totally stoopid post… but anyway…

Am I imagining this, or does anyone else experience this.

When my BS is high (and not even that high), I get a funny “sweetish” taste in my mouth… Was high all day yesterday for ??? knows why, and had this all day…

I was just thinking about this this morning and have decided to actually make a note before I test and then see if it correlates. Might be a good part of self-monitoring…

No it’s not your imagination if you could smell your breath it will have a sweet fruity smell. Also your urine will smell sweet.

Your ketones are high.

About a week before I was diagnosed with type 1, my husband asked me if I had been drinking wine when he smelled my breath. I hadn’t, and when I was diagnosed a week later, I had ketones.

when your bs is high, your body is doing everything it can to filter out the excess sugar in the blood.

most of us know that our kidneys help by filtering the sugar out into our urine, and before i was diagnosed, i was sweating out large amounts of sugar, to the point that i was getting a whitish residue on my dark clothes, which turned out to be pure sugar

you body is probably putting excess sugar into you saliva, which can also lead to a faster growth of bacteria in your mouth (one reason why diabetics are at a higher risk of gum disease), and it would cause a funny taste similar to what happens if you go several days without brushing your teeth

ketones will possibly do the same thing, but they normally come from a lack of insulin in your body, which is characterized by bg’s of 250+

You shouldn’t experience ketones at 140. You also shouldn’t have ketones with a brief period of high BG, like an hour after eating. It couldn’t be that high to come down to 140 at two hours.

I’ve only had the telltale sweet breath right before I was diagnosed. Very, very high BG.

This is completely normal. When I was younger my mom would always have me check my blood when she could “smell bananas on my breath.”

Gerri,

When a diabetic is coming down with a flu or something it is very possible to have ketones with an in range BG with the ketones becoming larger as the BG rises. David has had ketones with an in range BG in these instances. Not frequently, but it does happen.
