Gastric surgery for T2D?

What do folks think? Broad group of international experts recommend a obese or even slightly obese people undergo belly band/gastric bypass surgery to treat T2D. Would you be willing to have surgery if it promised to help control blood sugars and reduce or eliminate your need for medication?

No.

There’s too much of a risk of dying on the table.

Too many risks of complications afterwards, including MRSA in the hospital, wounds that won’t heal, and malnutrition.

I looked into bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve) at one point and decided it was very much not for me. My PCP kept pushing for me to get it, to the point that I changed doctors and told my new doctor right up front that it was NOT a conversation we were going to have. Ever.

It is a very personal decision. a difficult decision. here’s a good video from a HCP who has been through it

It’s definitely a personal decision. One thing people really have to look at when they’re making the decision is how they are eating beforehand.

For me, I don’t think surgery would have really done a lot of good. I don’t tend to eat a lot of “volume” all in one sitting, which is what the surgeries are meant to prevent. I tend to graze on small amounts here and there - which is exactly how people end up “cheating” the surgery afterwards.

That’s a no for me, as well. I would much rather count carbs, dose myself with insulin, and exercise over amputating part of my body (or whatever else the alternative surgeries do) and deal with all the complications that can arise from surgery (hello anal leakage).

According to guidelines I am too old,60’s and have had diabetes too long.Nancy

I think that a surgery as a T2D treatment is too extreme a measure, and doesn’t necessarily help. Statistically, only one third of those who undergo gastric bypass, go into remission. Please note: remission but not a cure. I personally think that diabetes cure doesn’t exist, because it’s a chronic condition.

Whatever happened to the remaining two thirds for whom the surgery didn’t benefit?

A little known fact: T2D can happen to young and thin people. Athletic, too. Such as Billie Jean King, a tennis pro.

My BG and A1C are both normal, and I’ve never been on any diabetes meds. My doc says that my T2D is under control. But by no means am I cured.

I blogged about it on Wordpress another day: Diabetes in Hibernating Mode
