Hair loss

Has anyone noticed hair loss or thinning from having a high a1c? I don’t know what is going on with me and my dermatologist says I am fine.

What does “high a1c” stand for? More than 7? More than 10?

to me ,yea i think ,high A1C means ur glucose levels have been high or higher than normal.
high blood sugar can, over time, lead to problems, including damage to the blood vessels. The vessel walls become thicker and less elastic, making it harder for blood to pass through.

I was really losing hair the few weeks before my diagnosis (a1c over 13). It got much better once I was diagnosed and started taking insulin.

Like Kim31, before I was diagnosed I was losing hair. When I got my blood sugars under control I stopped losing hair.

I heard that indeed uncontrolled blood sugar can cause hair loss…much as poor blood circulation, skin problems and stress will not spare our scalps!

High BGs cause itchy, dry skin so it seems likely to me that it could have an effect on hair too.

Sharp changes in your health status can also cause hair loss. This so called “hair shock” can happen with quick changes in blood sugars, diets etc.

In my case, I have noticed much hair loss over the years. However, as I got older I realized that only some of it was true hair loss, instead, it was simply growing out of different places. I won’t go into more detail.

My a1c has been in the 9ish level. So it’s really out of whack. I got blood work done and every thing came back normal. It looks like I have to get a scalp biopsy done now. Not too excited about that but I want to figure out what’s wrong with me. My guess is that it’s not diabetes related.

May want to have your thyroid checked too. Check T-3 and T-4 levels. Many with diabetes have thyroid problems. If you are loosing hair, tired, and also get cold easy it can be thyroid.

Did you ever find the cause of the hair loss? Did it grow back? I was diagnosed in July and that was one of my symptoms: hair loss. I've been on insulin for 6 months now and am hoping it goes back to the way it was before!

I noticed hair loss when my glucose was running high a few months back. Since dropping my A1C significantly, my hair has started growing at a quickened rate, and the density has gotten a lot better. I hope yours does the same!

I think you should have your thyroid checked too, hair loss is a symptom of thyroid problems.
