Hey all...I'm hoping to get some insight on this issue:
I've been using Omnipod since December. Up until April I was placing the pods on either my stomach or upper arms. However, I've recently decided to try it out on my upper thigh and I've had 3 instances where I've experienced severe pain near the insertion site moments after activating the pod. It's strange...The initial auto insertion is fine, but moments after activating the pod, a spot near the cannula (about an inch away from the pod) starts to hurt really bad. Two of the times the pain was tolerable but last week I was forced to rip the pod off of me 2 hours after activating it because the pain was so bad. I think it's something with the muscle in my leg because the pain worsens if I bend my leg in any position (like going up steps).
Anyways, has anyone else experienced this? I'm probably just going to stick to the stomach or upper arms from now on but I was just curious if type of thing is common.
I've noticed some odd muscle soreness around the site, but nothing I'd call painful. It is interesting. I wonder if other pump canulas do the same thing or if it's Omnipod specific?
One quick question, do you pinch up the skin around the pod (one big pinch) while it's inserting the canula? My nurse educator insisted I do that. It may help keep the canula out of muscle I'm thinking...
Zelle I have been podding for almost three years and have only experienced what you described once. Had placed the pod on my ab and triggered the cannula. The pain was excruciating. That pod lasted less than thirty seconds before I ripped it off. To this day I still hesitate to place a pod on my left ab. Back then I did pinch. I don't any more. Too many occlusions. My guess is I struck a nerve. Been using my arms and there is no fat anywhere on them and have had no problems. Thanks for bringing up the question. Take care.
Yep - I have had the same kind of pain but in my arms. I use upper arms and torso. The problems comes I think from nerves. My only reason for this conculsion is that not only is the pain around the site but also in my hand. So i just rip off and start again. I hope this helps.
I occasionally have this problem. I suspect it is because I've hit a nerve. Sometimes I have some stinging upon insertion but the pod works fine and I experience no further issues with delivery - the pod works normally. However, there are the ones where the insertion feels fine, but I experience a "pinching" type of pain when moving that part of the body afterward - upper thigh, buttocks, etc. I've experienced pinched nerves before, and that's what it feels like. If I have that happen, I simply remove the pod and start with a new one in a different location. It's definitely annoying, and something I believe happens with other pumps as well - not unique to the Omnipod.
Thanks for all the feedback guys. Only been diabetic for 6 months and it’s good to see how helpful and supportive people are on here. Take care everyone.
