Have you ever used diluted insulin?

Hi Folks,

I was home testing six months ago and saw higher-than-normal numbers, which set me on the road to investigating the cause. I've been low-carbing for about four months. I'm only very recently diagnosed as an early-stage Type 1.

My GAD is high, but with low-carbing, my BG numbers are still reasonable.

In his book, Dr. Bernstein talks about diluting insulin for people who only need small amounts.

Has anyone here ever used diluted insulin?

Dr. Bernstein is very specific about what insulins have diluting fluid available from the insulin manufacturer.

I'm most concerned about whether it is a common practice at all and whether my endo will accept it. So I wanted to learn all I can about it before I discuss it with my endo.

Thank you in advance,

Dilution of insulins more common with children. You can get the dilution liquid from your pharmacist, they will likely need to special order it. But the first thing to try is to get a syringe that has half unit markings. And remember, Regular insulin has a profile that better matches a protein/fat oriented meal.

I hardly ever correct. I was sick the other day, had tomato soup and was 180 mg/dl 2 hrs after my meal. For that I corrected. But 120 mg/dl 2 hrs after a meal, I'll just deal with it and try to learn from the experience.

Thanks, bsc!

I'm grateful to know that dilution is done with children. I should have thought of that. Thank you!

Sorry you were sick! Hope that you are on the mend!

Best wishes,

Marty

My endo won’t support it. I’d love to try it. The pump is his advised solution for those who want less insulin, since small amounts can be delivered over, say, two hours. Meanwhile, the 1/2 unit marked syringes are helpful. Alternately, I’ve heard that pens inject 1/2 units too. Would love to hear how things progress.
