Help for my dad - tips wanted

Hi, my name is Dawn and I’m the daughter of a great man with diabetes. I wanted to join this site because I live 3000 miles away from him and I don’t know how else to help him than to connect with his community. He doesn’t have access to a computer, really lives off-the-grid, so while this forum would be helpful if he could access it, I thought I could be his helper.

My dad has had diabetes for at least 10 years. He takes Lantus everyday and well, he can't pay for it easily. How do people in the "middle" get help? What I mean as the middle are those people who earn money, but not enough to pay for their own healthcare due to pre-existing conditions, and those who are below poverty limits, get any help? He struggles to pay for his meds every month because my mother has a heart condition and needs expensive meds, too. Anyone have any advice for a daughter who lives far away and wants to help her follks out?

Much, much appreciated!!!
Dawn

Here’s a long list of resources that may be of help. I use the Abbott people, sometimes, for strips…

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance works with pharmaceutical companies, doctors, other health care providers, patient advocacy organizations and community groups to help qualifying patients who lack prescription coverage get the medicines they need through the public and private programs. Many patients receive free or nearly free assistance. Following is a list of pharmaceutical companies you can call regarding your particular medications as well as a state-by-state list of local assistance that is available.

Abbott Diabetes Care Patient Assistance Program
The Abbott Diabetes Care Patient Assistance Program offers assistance on blood glucose meters and strips to low-income patients in the United States. In 2006, more than 5,200 patients were approved for assistance at a retail value of approximately $425,000. So you know, in that wonderful list of resources you just sent me, the link to the patient assistance program was slightly incorrect. Here is the correct one, so you can pass it on to other folks.
