Okay so I am getting desperate people! I am 23 weeks pregnant and have officially hit insulin resistance hell. I have not eaten since 10am yesterday morning because I cannot get my blood sugar to come under 200 no matter what I do. I have exercised and fasted and have taken a total of 13 units of humalog and my blood sugar will NOT budge. So as of right now I’m going on 18 hours in mid 200’s bg which is freaking me out because I know it is harming my baby. So I’ve decided last resort before calling the endo: inject correction into muscle. Please anyone who has done it or knows how tell me how to go about it.
Thanks,
Jenn
Call your endo. Get help from your doctor. Be safe. Dont wait.
Do not try it, Lil Mama, TOO unsafe. Call your doctor, maybe he can suggest a slow IV drip under controlled conditions, like in the ER, to get it down under watchful eyes? Are you spilling ketones? Do call your endo and your OB-GYN ( high risk, I assume) for the best way ti take care oof you and your little girl.
God Bless

Do you have another bottle/ pen to try? I find that sometimes, particularly toward the end of bottles, they don’t see to be quite as lively as they are at the beginning of the bottle, so I’ll test by trying a fresh bottle and see how it goes? A lot of times it results in an immediate crashing BG at which point I’ll just toss the old bottle. Although sometimes if there’s “activity” coming up, I’ll save “deader” insulin to use for running or whatever.
I didn’t do muscular injections but used to do IV R shots all the time. Come to think of it, I did some IV Novolog shots when my pump blew up as I was really high by the time I got home after my pump blew up. That is extremely dangerous and would drop me from 350 to 70 in like 1/2 hour. The sweating, etc. would start in about 15 minutes, and I’d test my BG and it would still be like 130 @ that point but that’s when I’d have a snack usually?
I (obviously…) don’t have any experience being pregnant but I read “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” when we were and I recall that eating is very important. I suggest at least having eggs/ meat/ bacon or some other type of low carb food?
Please don’t do anything extreme on your own. You do need to eat - I agree with AR, try some pure protein, and call your endo even if it is Sunday! If the endo isn’t available go to an ER.
All good ideas here. Call your doctor right away; on Sunday, you might have to wait a while for the answer. In the meantime, do not experiment with either muscle or IV injections. Get fresh insulin. Eat some protein; you and your baby both need it. You will be fine, just take prudent action.
Injecting into muscle won’t really make the humalog any more powerful, it just makes it act faster. I know that you think 13 units of humalog should have made progress, but once your blood sugar get’s elevated you build up insulin resistance and it takes more insulin. How have you been correcting? Have you reduced your correction factor to adjust for higher blood sugars?
ps. It is possible that other factors are causing an elevated blood sugar (like being sick).
pps. And just like with DP, fasting may not help bring your blood sugar down.
