Help!

High sugars in early pregnancy, I;m five weeks and three days pregnant..My sugar has been stuck on 213 for 4 hours or so..No matter how much insulin i take it want come down, i have checked my pump changed my site...what can this be?

I had high numbers that wouldn’t come down too. What worked for me was a long walk with my husband. Seriously! The exercise and less stressful environment really helped me out. I’m sure all will be great for you soon.

First, don’t panic…that can make it worse. The hormones are probably just kicking in. And I know site changes can sometimes cause a delay in absorption for me…Whenever I change my site, I actually prime several times to get the new site working quickly. Also, some light exercise might help it along. If all else fails, a correction “bolus” via syringe should help. We’ve all had highs in early pregnancy, so don’t worry too much. The low 200s for a little while won’t hurt your baby.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

Warm Wishes,

Don’t stress too much about it! I had the exact same thing in the first few weeks, from weeks 4-7 (I’m now 12 weeks). I took TONS of insulin, regardless of what my pump told me to give myself (like double or triple the amount), and just tested really often to catch any lows before they got too bad. Another woman also said that sometimes she would give herself an injection as well as a bolus just to get the high down faster. I also definitely agree with the exercise!

Good luck, and things will get easier! =)

Hi- You may have already thought of this, but I basically got through my pregnancy with the ‘increase basal’ option… when I was really high I would increase by 50%, not sure which pump you have, but I use the one touch ping…good luck! Kris

change the insulin. This can also cause high blood sugars… just like food insulin can go bad

Hey Sharray - I am not a pumper but I can tell you that during my first 9 weeks, I had a hard time getting my blood sugars in check. Not horribly high but not what they want you to be … I did not realize how important it was to increase my Lantus. It went up a lot over my pregnancy but the first 9 weeks I was not increasing it much and found out afterwards that it really should have been going up as I was increasing my short term shots. You said 4 hours … you may want to try increasing your long term insulin when you are due for your next dose. Careful about all that extra insulin you are taking … I am sure you are, though! Good luck. Hope your doing better soon?

Thanks everyone for your advice, i changed the site and also the insulin, and my sugar did drop (51)…but was glad i could get it down…
