High Blood Sugar in morning

I was diagnosed with type 1 last spring, and so far I have been doing a good job coping with it. However, sometimes when I choose to eat something before i go to bed, i wake up with high blood sugar in the morning even if i give myself the right amount of insulin. Last night for instance i had a sandwich and some potato chips, and I gave myself more then enough insulin, but when i woke up this morning i was at 220. This always seems to happen when i eat something within 2 hours or so of going to bed. Has anyone else ever had this problem or know why this is happening? Thank you

Might be that when you sleep everything slows down.

I use Levemire and Novlog as a T1 and I only ave 6% A1c’ s and can only hare with you how I achieve that level… others with lower A1c’s can chime in.

Well, assuming your taking a Basal insulin?

  1. Have you done a Basal test - Fasting for 8 -12 hr increaments, to see if your taking enough Basal insulin to keep your BG’s in the range of btwn 80-120… and you want to try to start the test with a BG of btwn 80-120
  2. They say your not supposed to get up in the AM with being +30 pts higher than when you went to bed to determine your taking the right amt. of basal… ( I strive to get up with-in 10 pts )
  3. Do you know in what % increaments you should increase your Basal and over how many Days before increasing it?
  4. Do you know about using the 500 and the 1500-1800 Rule?
  5. Do you know what your SF ( sensitivity factor ) is?
  6. do you know how long it takes for your Bolus - Fast acting Insulin to Peak after taking it and how long it last at peak?
  7. I assume you are also using the Carb Counting Method? and Know what your I;CR is? ( Insulin-to-carb ratio ) and you did count the correct # of carbs? I have to count out the # of chips , put them in a bolw to be close to having the right amt. of crabs figured out… The breads carbs per Slice and anything in the sandwhich that may have carbs…

If not aware of These and many other questions are answered in getting the book> THINK LIKE A PANCREASE

Hint… I strive to eat a min. of 3-4 hrs before My bedtime to give my Bolus the 3+ hrs to fully work for me… If I need or want to eat a Snack later? It has to be a ‘O’ carb snack… Deli meat, etc.
and I test at bedtime and if I am At or above 120, i take a CB ( correction bolus) and if I am Above 150’s, I will also set my Alarm for 3 hrs and test to be sure I am btwn 100-120 range and if not? take another CB. I found with me, I need to take a higher CB for a Bedtime correction vs normal daytime CB’s. One reason? I’m not active and sleeping and thus not burning up calaories as well… ( Why Senendary people need more Insulin - and i need a Higher Amt. ( double) of my Bedtime Basal than I do 12 hrs later for my daytime Basal. Chart is in the book on that subject as well )

hope that helps

A sandwich & potato chips are quite a lot of carbs before going to sleep. Digestion slows down during sleep, along with everything else. Chances are the insulin was gone before the meal was fully digested. It’s risky to bolus before bed because you could go low while asleep.

I don’t eat before bed.

I have had T1 now for 1 year, I have been using a pump now for about 3 weeks. I am still having problems waking up high particularly when I eat late in the evening. I have increased by basal gradually and it is improving. I try really hard not to eat after about 7.30 pm. and if I stick to that I can have good readings in the morning, but more often than not I do have a snack before bed and pay the consequences. I also need a higher rate of insulin in the evening. My endo told me it was to do with my basal, but I also it is about what I eat before bed.

What I find has helped is eating no later than 4 hours before going to bed. For me, it’s 4 hours because that’s about how long insulin lasts. If I am eating later, then I bolus conservatively and set my alarm clock to get up 4 hours after the bolus to check my BG and correct if necessary. This way I minimize night-time hypos - which are the worst sort, I find - and it really helps to wake up in target BG each morning.
