Does anyone have difficulty getting all the supplies and insulin needed to take care of thier diabetes because of the high costs or because of a high deductible on their insurance plans?
Yes! Paying out of pocket for T1D supplies gets very expensive. Even with insurance I shop around online for extra supplies such as lancets and test strips because I use more per month that my insurance will NOT cover. I would recommend saving up money and shop around online and compare prices for any supplies you need.
Have you tried getting any coupons or discount cards on line? Believe it or not, someone at my insurance company told me about Novolog and their coupons. This woman had a diabetic daughter and felt my pain on the cost of insulin, so she offered some cost savings advice. I don’t know what kind of insulin you’re using, but if it’s Novolog, go to Novolog.com and you’ll find they will provide you with a savings card. I was paying over $250 every 90 days (after insurance!) for my insulin, but with the Novolog discount card, I pay just $25 a month (for a total of only $75 every 90 days). I have to pick up my insulin at the pharmacy instead of getting it through my mail order provider, but it’s worth it!!! I got a discount card for my testing supplies also. I use the Bayer Contour Next Link, and I went to their site, downloaded a discount card, and save $135 every 90 days on those supplies. I test 8 times a day, and my cost was over $260 every 90 days, and now it’s only about $125 - again, picking up in pharmacy rather than mail order.
Recently, my insurance stopped covering lancets! I started comparing prices and found my local grocery store, Frys, owned by Kroger, offered a generic brand for $1.99 for a box of 100. It was cheaper than when my insurance covered it!
Also, my Endo, writes my prescription for double what I use monthly, so I pay 1 co-pay for two bottles of insulin. I will always ask for free samples at my Dr. visits
