Hit a gusher with my Dexcom sensor insertion

Wow, in something like 4 or 5 years since I’ve started using my Dexcom, I’ve never hit blood… until yesterday when I was inserting a new sensor. OF COURSE.

It was kind of impressive.

There was enough blood that I figured it would probably interfere with the sensor readings, so I pulled it out and inserted another one.

I wonder if Dexcom will replace the sensor? I figured I’d ask around on here before calling Dexcom, such is my hatred for customer support lines (no matter how okay they are).

This has happened to me maybe four times. Dexcom has always replaced the sensor. I have read that they say minor bleeding is OK and doesn’t require sensor replacement. But if you’ve already replaced it, they will probably send you a new one. They ate well tuned to the limits insurance puts on supplies.

Yup, they will replace it. I believe you don’t even have to call them. I have never used it but I have been told they now have an online form you can use to make your request.

I have used it to report sensor failures, and no need to wait on hold for support.

This happened to me a few weeks ago and gave me quite a big bruise! FYI I was told via Dexcom chat that if there is blood under the transmitter pad not to use that sensor.

Thanks all for the responses. You’re absolutely right about Dexcom’s customer service. I filled out the online form and they were on it like white on rice. A new sensor is on its way.

I’ve hit gushers so huge that there was blood not just under the transmitter pad, but overflowing over the transmitter pad!

I had that happen with a infusion set one time and I was wearing a white shirt at work. It looked like I go stabbed.

Just had my first today! And reading everyone’s post, it’s a toss up on using it or not. Mine has of blood inside the casing but the two connectors are not covered. I am trying Dexcom but of course there is something wrong with my phone/ email (neither of which have been changed?!), so that means a call. But just wondering as I have this one presoaking ( literally, I guess) and don’t need to change it for 4 more hours, if I just let it dry and hope for the best?

My last gusher, I lost more than 2 oz. of blood (captured it in a pill bottle, as I didn’t have ready access to tissue/paper towels. But then I’m on blood thinner.
