Hmmmm what to do, what to do

OK. So I met with my doc. A long and complicated process as I am about to explain...

After really roller-coastering BGLs I finally got in to see him. As I live in a small country town in rural NSW, this is not an easy process. It took me 5 weeks to get the appointment with him and then I was really lucky and got called in after 4 weeks (because someone canceled and I teach with the doc's wife). I had actually made this appointment prior to my last post if you are wondering. I met with him 4 weeks ago and...

Well he changed my meds. Well in changed he took me off one and increased another. He stopped the only one that seemed to be affecting my BGLs and increased metformin which upsets my stomach really badly. I stuck with it for a fortnight as he asked and spent most of that fortnight with a really upset stomach and high BGLs.

Now I am in a quandry. I have made another appointment to see him and discuss this with him but I cant get in until September. I cannot go another 6 weeks like this. Do I lower my met and restart my old meds but keep a closer eye on them and get myself into a more set routine or do i fight the battle of the belly and throw up from here until Sept? What would you do?

Well, I'm no medical expert, but I have always understood vomiting and diarrhoa are bad for diabetics as they lose a lot of the medication they need to take. My doctor has me taking Metformin (diabex XR) after my evening meal so any problems are over by the next morning. Maybe this would work for you? I would also look at eating low carb in order to keep my bgs down. Good luck from a sandgroper

You might want to consider a new endo and make a trip to the emergency room. Personally, I think this is a dangerous situation and the endo is irresponsible if he can't make time for you.

Is one of the meds, perhaps the one they increased, Metformin of some sort or another? I've read here that about 2 weeks of GI issues is not uncommon while people get used to that.

How much metformin were you on and how much are you one? ER or regular? What was the med that was dropped? How many carbs do you eat a day/meal and are you getting exercize? I'd probably adjust your metformin to a level you feel comfortable with. I max out at 1500mg (pain and puking) and am reasonable comfortable at 1000 mg. It generally should be taken after food, and my impression is that more issues result with high/higher carb meals.

I would go back to what you were doing before and eat lower carb if you don't. Call the office and tell them you need to speak to the doc now, that you're having all these symptoms and high bg. Then go to er if they don't do anything. Maybe they can put you on a better regimen. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

I don't care how busy the doctor is or what his appointment availability is. You have a right to a reasonable level of doctor interaction given its urgent/emergent nature. Especially since the symptoms that you're dealing with occurred at least in part due to his recent med changes.

I would appeal to his office to help you through this rough patch. If the doctor will not respond to this situation then it bodes ill for any future problems. People can't gracefully align their illness occurrence with a tidy office calendar! I would find a new doc in that case.

At least see if he'll give you a call back phone call. Common issue with metformin though.
