How often do you change your lancet?

As long as it goes in and comes back out without the necessity to pull it out of my finger… It is good. I used to change them every time. But that meant I would have to carry extra ones with me, and when I would go back packing or something, that was just more stuff to carry in and back out. I usually replace every two weeks or so

I put the cap back on my lancets after I use them and store them in a jar marked “dirty/used”. Then, if I want to reuse them I can just take the caps off, soak them overnight in rubbing alcohol, and put the caps back on them once they dry. Put them back in the container marked “clean and sterile”, use them again, repeat until they don’t work anymore.

Wow, I’m starting to feel extremely anal here. LOL…

No joke, shortly after I was diagnosed about 9 years ago I lanced my finger, squeezed it, and shot a blood stream several inches into the air. It was an odd experience. Never happened since. Still don’t change my lancets but once every couple months.

Ha ha! Same thing happened to me. Usually have problems getting blood out due to poor circulation. Squeezed, got some blood out. Test failed. Squeezed again and jet stream came out!!! Hit the wall behind me. Wondered where all the marks of blood came from, till I looked at my hand, and there was blood running down my finger!

I switch when the lancet gets a lil dull or it hurts more than usual… a few months, like replacing a toothbrush

Well, you’re not supposed to use alcohol with them because the alcohol removes the coating on the lancet needle which helps them be smooth and not hurt, or terribly callous your fingers.

I will use the lancet maybe 2 or 3 times, generally never more than that.and I do not want to carry around another “device”, so I just stab my finger, turn the little round cover around sideways to mark it as a "used " one, stick it back on; then I will use that lancet 1 or 2 more times, then, I will use another. I have never had a problem getting enougth blood out and I just do not like the lancing “pens” . I just stab and go. Have always done this. and I just think it is gross to use the lancets again and again. pre-pump when I was on the syringres for over 30 years,I only used them more than once in a severe pinch. Just gross to use it again to me, and I guess it was the old-school training from my diagnosis in 1968 that said doi not use the syringe more than once… and when affordable home glucometers came round 20-something years later , I felt I could only use that lancet once!!!

God bless,

Brunetta

I change mine when they start hurting. Generally after 2 or 3 uses.

i very rarley change the lancets. If anyone changes the lancet in my pricker its my mom

Me, too, Kari. Just not that big of a deal to me if it’s not hurting. And I’ve been diabetic 30 years.

Oh yeah, when I was on pens I would use the same tip for days. I’m just saying I wouldn’t use one tip on multiple pens for different insulins - contamination issues.

Have you heard of anyone getting a finger-infection from reusing a lancet? I’ve never heard of it happening.

For many of us, it’s not all at about price - it’s about convenience. For me at least, I’m often on the run when testing (or teaching first graders) and I don’t have the time to switch out a lancet and properly dispose of the old one. I just grab my lancing device and poke. I’ve been diabetic going on 19 years and don’t even really have much in the way of callouses.

Isopropyl Alchohol isn’t an effective instrument sterilizer. If you truly wanted to sterilize them, you’d have to use something a lot stronger (like bleach)…which might have other weird effects on the lancet.

Daylight savings!
No not really, but still maybe only once a month and maybe a couple of extra times if it gets blunt, but they never seem to! I don’t always wash my hands either. Alcohol never unless at the Dr.'s office. Thirty years of testing and I don’t really have calluses. I use a different finger every day and move around both sides for that day.

I thought I was bad not changing the pen needles. I am using the pen until my new pump comes in but it seems like if you are careful recapping the needle its no big deal.

We use a new lancet every time. They are very very cheap. Like 4 bucks for 100 or something or less on sale. It seems unsanitary to re use them to me.

I could not eat hamburgers for about a year after microbiology. The worst thing was the mayo in the barfateria. It grew all kinds of fun things…

Contact Accu-Chek and tell them you want to try the softclix - they will mail you a free one along with 25 lancets.

I don’t use my left hand because I play the guitar. Bending strings or even plain fretting would probably be painful. I use the ring and pinky on my right hand because they are the easiest to get blood from. Used to use my middle finger also but getting blood proved too problematic.
