if i pre-bolus for my intended meal and then begin eating, but somewhere during that meal, i decide i want to eat more (carbs, etc.) , do i need to pre-bolus (and wait again before eating the extra food) or can i just bolus and continue eating the additional food intake?
If I eat out or go to a party, usually my situation for eating more than planned, I will pre-bolus but I think of it more as a “down payment” for my meal. If I eat over and above my usual meal amounts, a judgment that is more art than science, I’ll bolus for the extra while I eat and enjoy that food right away. I can always balance off any post-meal BG rises with a walk or a little extra insulin.
Same here Terry. it is the best way I know to take care of the situation. I mean what other choice do we really have? Stopping in the middle for 15 minutes seems impractical at best.
My meals are very planned out during a normal day. I know what i’m going to eat and when. So, when a situation like this arises, I just cover the extra carbs as I go, if I want to over-indulge, I don’t want to wait to do so!
My T:Slim has a quick bolus feature (not sure if other pumps have this or not), where I can basically hit a button and take insulin without even looking at my pump. It’s nice for situations like this.
MM pumps have EASY BOLUS to do the same thing. It used to be called AUDIO BOLUS. Don’t know why they felt compelled to rename it, as it still uses tones to alert the user to the number of units about to be injected, prior to hitting ACTIVATE.
miss margie,
please tell me about this “quick bolus” feature on your pump! i am researching new pumps since my current one’s warranty is almost up. i use the MM Paradym, which i do love (i have really gotten comfortable using it) but i am completely open to hearing about diff features on other pumps.
It’s awesome! There’s a button on the top of the pump to turn the screen off (think of a smart phone) If I hold it down for a few seconds the pump vibrates or beeps (mine’s set to vibrate) then I can push that button one time for every 5 carbs (you get to set the number of carbs). It then vibrates/beeps as many times as I pushed the button to confirm. If everything is okay, I hold the button down again and it delivers the bolus. It sounds a little complicated but I got the hang of it after 2 or 3 times. It comes up on the screen, but I don’t even look at it.
It’s great for those surprise foods. A couple of weeks ago my ma and I went to Arby’s. I got a salad and she got a sandwich and cheese sticks. She offered me a cheese stick after I had bolused for my salad, so I quick bolused for it. People are constantly bringing candy into work, I just quick bolus for a piece when I have one.
Also, if I’m super busy at work (I’m a nursing assistant, we get super busy) and my blood sugar is a little high but I don’t have time to go to somewhere away from my residents to pull my pump out, I can quick bolus a little until I can do a proper correction.
i think i found the button; is it the one on the left side of the pump with a B and an arrow on it? i think i need to set up the function. it just has - - - on it now when i press the button.

[/quote]You could always open up the manual that came with your pump I really do worry that folks don’t even read these things, and I think they are full of good information.
I follow the KISS protocol. (Keep it simple, stupid) lol. Just add the appropriate amount additional insulin and enjoy your meal. If you’re getting off into unfamiliar territory with foods you’re not sure about, do an additional bg test or two after eating just to make sure you’re on track and adjust if necessary.
Btw this is where afrezza REALLY shines because I don’t take afrezza until 20-25 minutes after eating. With a big meal I’ll take one dose at 20 minutes and the second at 40. The ability to eat now and dose later and still have great control is very liberating to me.
that’s not how you do an EASY BOLUS. check the manual. I use EASY BOLUS exclusively (unless I do an extended bolus which is rare for me). EASY BOLUS will add a bolus on top of a currently-running extended type of bolus such as a SQUARE WAVE.
i just did a dual wave bolus for my lunch. so if i see a sudden spike in my BG, i would just push the B button and it would curb my BG by adding insulin?
Conversely, if you want to STOP an extended bolus, do a SUSPEND, and then you can RESUME, to take you back to your current basal, and no more bolus would be delivered.
