As a mom of 3 children with type 1 diabetes I often volunteer to attend field trips with my kids so that I can be there for them, here's why i am horrible when it comes to field trips
We were horrible about volunteering to go on field trips w/ our "straight"/ non-D daughter however she sort of requested that we stop because we are so horrible and embarrassing. At this point, I'm busy enough for work that while I miss it, I'm ok. Diabetes would certainly be nerve wracking. One of her teachers had T1 and was super cool about it, just like laid back. There's one girl in her school who has a pump and just wears it stuck to her thigh which also strikes me as pretty laid back about it.
Diagnosed with type 1 at 11, and been going on field trips (where only I was diabetic, no one had a clue about the disease anyway) alone since I was 13, and was pretty alright. At some point you've gotta trust them with it, cause its their own diabetes and they must learn to worry about it more than you. I myself dont know how I'd do it when I have kids who are diabetic, but my parents were ok with me going on field trips after becoming independent when treating my diabetes, never asking for help.
At my high school, it is protocol that a substitute nurse attends every field trip with me. For public schools (In PA), it is required or can be requested. I thought that it was a joke and was pretty offended because I thought my school district did not have faith in me to handle my own disease. I also thought it would be awkward having a stranger following me all day. When I went on my field trip,everything went extremely well. The sub nurse was very nonchalant and cool about my diabetes. She kept everything on the 'DL' so I wasn't put on the spot. I feel that if a child can go to school, they are capable to go on a feild trip.
