Child Care in Summer, Field Trips and Such

Hello. Planning for summer recess. Our local child care facility hosts a day camp during the summer. We’ve participated for the past several years. This summer will be the first after my 11-y/o daughter’s T1D diagnosis and I’m really nervous! Camp is usually from 8:00 to 5:00 and includes swimming, sports themes, and a weekly field trip. The weekly field trip is usually to amusements parks and water parks within a 2.5 hour radius of where we live. So far, I’m not real comfortable with the field trips, but I also don’t want to set my daughter apart. Any suggestions…should she go…how to make it safe…

Other info includes …she doesn’t seem to feel her lows, currently using MDI, has a dexcom g5, no nurse on site, care givers are usually college kids on summer break. Thanks!

Hi Anita1, It’s understandable that you would be nervous as what parent wouldn’t be. I would ask if you can meet the summer staff for 30 minutes and educate them as to your daughters needs. Since she has a dexcom, your daughter and staff will be able to help monitor her BS. On field trip days (all days really) just make sure she has a little diabetic bag with snacks, juice, etc. I’m sure your daughter has learned some self care so you two could just talk some various situations through. I would not exclude her from the field trips through. Another idea would be to have a relative, or family friend chaperone on field trip days, especially ones that were further away. Sounds like a fun camp, I hope everything goes well!
