I just found out im type2 in march..i went in the hospital cuz i had the flu they told me my sugar was 301. So my dr put me on 500mg metformin and 2mg glimpride. I got a couple questions...is it a bad thing if i dont take my meds on the days i work? i work at a fast pace pizza joint and it is impossible for me to get a break when i should. my sugar has dropped several times while i been there and ill grab a peice of hard candy then get my dinner after that i am so weak for several hours. Im not so concerned about my sugar going up now im worried about it going down. i eat right count my carbs and gotta snack every 2 to 3 hrs. my other question is can i break my metformin in half and see how that does me. it just says metformin on my script so i dont know if it time release or not
It is important to try as best you can to keep your numbers within range at all times, it will be difficult to do if you skip your meds. Many around her use 140 as a goal for max blood sugar.
The glimpride can cause lows because it causes your pancreas to put insulin into your blood stream irregardless of food intake or blood sugar level. One possibility would be to see if your doc will eliminate the glimpride, since it is causing problems, and replace it with a larger dose of metformin. The max dose of metformin is 2000 mg and generally it does not cause lows. Some need to ramp up their dose of metformin slowly to minimize the gastrointestinal problems it sometimes causes.
If you are taking ER it will say on your pill bottle, you are correct that you shouldn't split a ER pill. The regular metformin can be split but as I said it's unlikely that the metformin is causing your problems.
thanks for commenting...its just hard to understand this that i was high now im fighting with it being low...when i had to get my scripts filled it took several days to get my glimpride...i was still going low, i guess that was cuz it was still in my system
If you spend any amount of time around here you quickly learn that you must be your own advocate. Here's a link to the bloodsugar101 website which really helped me to understand what was going on with my body and helped chart a way forward.
