I have been calling people all day and so thus far all I have done is left a few messages and now I am hoping for a prompt reply so this can be dealt with as soon as possible.
I left a message with UFT, OSHA, and was referred to a few more places that I will be calling soon.
You need a good attorney. I had a very good chemistry teacher who was very open about his diabetes. Taking medication and testing your blood sugar is necessary.
Most people who don’t have diabetes don’t understand these requirements.
People and professionals with diabetes are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Diabetics have very recently been added to this list of people have certain protections & rights.
Seek a good legal advisor & attorney,
A lawyer qualified in this area would be more than happy to represent you,
The when I lived in NJ I worked in schools and as a network engineer. One of the schools I worked in the Vice Principal was diabetic and on a pump and she was also on (if not the chair of) the affirmative action committee I would check if your district had a similar group. Also speak to your union rep. This is ludicrous. It sounds like the school will be named after you when you get done with them. If you are in NYC area you also may want to contact “Shame on you” or Help me Howard" I also know for a fact that an old friend of mine who is type 2 diabetic (just came off of meds after losing 60+lbs) is an English teacher in Queens at one of the high schools and she never had a problem.
