I just did hurt my big toe: should i panic?

Ok, so i was moving a furniture and my toe nail got lifted by a crack in the floor. Ouch. It bled a bit and i disinfected it right away with soap and left my foot in the water a while.
After all the amputations stories i have heard…i’m scared.
Should i run to the emergency right now???
if not, when should i start worrying?
Thank you…

Do Not Panic (that’s the rule at our house). I know your control has not been good, and this seems like a legitimate concern, but I believe where the real problem with feet comes in is with neuropathy. Can you feel your feet? It seems you can (ouch!) I would treat it with antibiotic cream and watch it. If it begins to show any signs of infection . . . . still Do Not Panic . . . but call your doctor.

Every year I usually drop some anvil or something on my toe and end up damaging my toe enough that the toenail drops off. Usually, it is just something I just “deal” with. But I have to be honest with you. You need to be extra diligent. Your last HbA1c was 14.4. Your blood sugar has clearly been very high. It would be greatest wish to hear you say that you have turned things around and your blood sugar is consistently below 200 mg/dl, but I suspect that may not yet be true (please, please work on this).

That being said, your problem is not an emergency, but a healing problem. Don’t go to the ER, but you would be wise to visit an urgent clinic to get an initial evaluation and then set up an appointment with a podiatrist to address proper healing. With highly elevated blood sugars, wounds on your feet will heal slowly and be very prone to infections. You did the right thing to wash it and disinfect it, but the safe thing is to follow up with specific care to make sure you heal properly.

Unless it continues to bleed, or the bone is coming through the toe there is no reason to see an ER. Relax!!!

Its going to hurt, tearing the nail bed hurts a lot. The nail might discolor, you might have to clip the nail a little if it is at a weird angle and or catches things because of it. If it really scares you, and you’ll feel better call your primary MD and tell them you want an appointment.

The ONLY thing they’ll AMPUTATE might, might be the nail!!!

RELAX, no bones saws involved…

i concur. The biggest risk with high numbers is the risk of infection (i know first hand needing emergency surgery when my A1C was 9.5). I wouldn’t rush to the ER now, but i would try to get it checked out and least call your doc and let him know of the issue. he/she may have specific things they want you to do or look for.
