I went from type 1.5 to type 1

my C-Peptide came back that I am no longer producing Insulin. So I am now a type 1. But since I started this group, I plan to stay even though I’m no longer a type 1.5 (LADA). But wanted to let y’all know. I never knew I was honeymooning! It seemed to have happened so fast. It is weird I’ve only had this disease since 12/2006. And I’m now a type 1. Was hoping my pancreas would behave longer but oh well.

Hi Amy! Thanks for the update.

I think that it all depends on how you use the terms '“type 1” and “type 1.5”… the line between them is still fuzzy.

A two year honeymoon is nice and long though!! I also consider myself type 1, because I had fairly quick onset to no insulin production with a year.

Glad to hear that you will stay will us!

I guess 2 years is good :)…I was just hoping for longer! I am still hoping someday there will be a cure so I dont have to carb count or not feel guilty for overeating.

I agree!!!

Amy-

Hello! Thank you for the update. Did you physician put you on insulin or on med’s (when you first was dx’d)? I am also Type 1.5. Insulin production is still pretty decent. I’ve been living with diabetes since 2004. My endo decided to put me on insulin in 2008 to preserve my pancreas.

When I first started out, she put me on insulin as the test wasn’t giving me a type. You are lasting longer than I. The thing is, you dont know you are honeymooning at all!

I thought I was type 1 right off the bat as I wasn’t producing any insulin by the time I was diagnosed. It wasn’t until years later I was told that I was a type 1.5 because I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 32. I thought type 1.5 or LADA has all the features of type 1 except that you’re diagnosed in adulthood as opposed to childhood. Maybe I’m confused? All these different names for diabetes is confusing!

Hi Lisa: Type 1.5 is not a recognized term, it is a slang term. You have adult-onset Type 1 diabetes. Mary Tyler Moore was diagnosed at age 33, and no one “reclassified” her as Type 1.5 based on age. The majority of new onset cases of Type 1 are actually seen in adults, but there sure is a lot of denial about that.

Melitta, thanks for the help. A lot of non-diabetic people are very hard to convince that I have type 1 because I was diagnosed in adulthood, so I kind of stick with 1.5 for the most part. It helps them understand and saves me the trouble of having to convince them and listen to their repetitive medical “expertise.”

Hi Amy - I was diagnosed in 2008 at the age of 37 in my first pregnancy. not gestational, but LADA. talk about really stumping my doctors! Omnipod pumper and still require very little insulin, but i assume that will change.

In my opinion, Dr Denise Faustman is our best hope for a cure.
