A long term T1D is now insulin free after receiving implanted islets.
It would help if he would discuss or if they would ask him about any bad effects he might have from the antirejection drugs. For people who are considering this that is kind of a major issue to think about. Also having this treatment do you still have to test your blood sugar all the time? I’m kind of wondering about that. And you still have that fear of abnormal blood sugars so you’re never totally free from this disease and it’s fears etc. even when you are “cured” or you get something that is close like this.
I’d also be nervous of the autoimmune attack coming back and killing off the new islet cells. Though maybe the anti-rejection drugs block that.
I’m truly grateful to all who are doing clinical trials but anti-rejection drugs could be worse than insulin therapy. I’m waiting for encapsulated beta stem cells, no threat of rejection. Holding thumbs it works!! The trials seem to be going well.
