I m suffering fromTYpe1 diabetics. I have a big query. Are there any chances of my kids having or inheriting diabetics . My family history donot have sgns of diabetics . And currently Im unmaried.
The stat I’ve seen quoted. When the father is T1 & the mother is not, children have a 6% chance of inheriting T1.
definately genes r inherited so choose a partner whose lineage r nt affcted
I’ve heard this stat too. I don’t remember what it is if the Mom has d, but i think it is a bit less.
Cora
I believe it’s a 4% chance if the mother has T1.
I heard 5% increase if mother is T1. That was from my endocrinologist’s office when I had my first. So far, my 2.5 year old is fine, though we’ll be participating yearly in the TrialNet study that screens for markers for developing diabetes. Baby number two in on the way and we’ll probably do the same for her.
Congrats on the new baby!
Does anyone know if there is any cross-over of inheritance between type 1 and type 2? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that having a relative with type 2 does have some impact on the chance of getting type 1. I’m type 1 and did have a grandmother with type 2.
Getting a bit off topic too, I’ve wondered about the capacity of someone with type 2 genes and “factors” “taking a different turn” and getting type 1. In my case I looked like a prime candidate for type 2: I have been between 10 and 40 pounds overweight much of my life, had the cluster x or whatever it’s called: high cholesterol, high bp ( isn’t there a third one?) middle aged. But I ended up getting type 1. (no double diabetes - am insulin sensitive - normal weight, and the bp and cholesterol ceased being problems when I lost weight at diagnosis). Definitely makes you wonder if the two are closer than we think - a common cause that takes different paths depending on life factors. Just ruminating!
What Zoe said…Joslin Center is or has done a study and others re: if relatives have T2 and how it affects offspring with T1.
My Dad had Type 1, I got it and my brother’s son got it.
My mother was type 2, her cousin was type 1, I am type 1, and my son is type 1.
Hi Spring. That’s a good question. From what I’ve read, T2 seems to have more of an inherited component. Found this: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Diabetes—Juvenile-Type-I/Inheriting-diabetes/show/420516
The website, http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes/women-diabetes-faqs.jsp gives the following answer to the question:
Will my children inherit diabetes from me?
It all depends on risk factors that include: no diabetes in the family
– 11% chance of type 2 diabetes by age 70 and 1% chance of type 1 diabetes by age 50. One parent with type 1 diabetes – 6% chance of type 1 diabetes (father with type 1 diabetes), 4% chance of type 1 diabetes (mother with diabetes who was younger that 25 when the child was born) and 1% chance of type 1 diabetes (mother with diabetes who was older than 25 when the child was born). Risk doubles if the parent was diagnosed by age 11
One parent with type 2 diabetes (diagnosed before the age of 50) – 14% chance of type 2 diabetes. Both parents with type 2 diabetes (overall risk) – 45% chance of type 2 diabetes.
This is interesting to think about. I personally believe there is a link between Type 1 and Type 2 in offspring. Both of my parents are atypical (e.g. not overweight and all the other prevelant “risk factors” associated with Type 2) Type 2’s with me being Type 1.
Congrats on the baby! I also do Trialnet for my kids. They are 9 and 6 years old and so far no markers
I agree with you Zoe. My grandmother died in 1965 before all the typing became popular. She took insulin but who knows what type she really was. She had one Type 1 daughter and one Type 2 daughter. The Type 1 was diagnosed in her 50s. Hers was pretty sudden onset though and not the typical LADA. She has always been very thin all her life and is not insulin resistant. The Type 2 was very overweight beginning after her first son was born. The T2 was married to another T2 and they had a T1 son. The T1 son died a couple years ago from heart disease. He was very insulin resistant and also had the cholesterol problems. He ate French fries every day of his life so it is probably hard to say if that was from diet or genetics or both. My mother is not diabetic even though 2 of her sisters are. She however has a T1 kid (me) and a T2 kid. My parents divorced when I was younger & I don’t keep in touch with my father but my mother does say he has diabetics in his family also – to my knowledge, he is not diabetic.
You have a mixed-up family too Sue!!
Just to keep in mind, these widely quoted stats (6% chance if father has T1 and 4% chance if mother has T1) EXCLUDE the many adult-onset Type 1s. So the percentages would be higher–how much, someone needs to correctly account for all the Type 1s (and not lump adult-onset Type 1s in with Type 2 diabetes).
Is this why I have read 7 percent for Father and 5 percent for Mother ??
I do know several Moms with d and their offspring do NOT have diabetes …(.note : I am not going to say " yet " )
I need to add this …I am glad I was born regardless of the stats : diabetes, cancer, and all the other stuff in my family …Thanks Dad and Mom
Yes indeed Kelly, we both do don’t we? One thing I forget to mention, my son and my second cousin were both diagnosed type 1 as toddlers, and I was diagnosed type 1 at the age of 38, although age of diagnosis probably doesn’t matter?
