Insulin:Carb Ratio

Hello again friends,
Going on a solid month on insulin I am finally starting to maintain my BG within the 80-130 range with an occasional spike depending on what I eat. I know I can start eating a better, and my ultimate goal is to have my carb:insulin ration under control before my first visit with the specialist (Jan 18th.) Any help on how you guys started with a ratio. I usually take about 8-14 Units of Humalog depending what I eat before meals. I appreciate this greatly, thanks to the new friends I have met, and the new friends I will make!
Take care,
Barney

I agree with Sally..Once I got my pump, I read all about the ICR and started testing with # of carbs I ate and how much insulin I was giving myself....There is a calculation with adding the total number of insulin you currently take for the day and then it's divided by 2?? Well anyhow, when I calculated it based on what I was, it was 1:20, but after I started really testing the amount of insulin and my numbers, my endo recalculated it to 1:30..he said it was smart to test as much as I did. Once I started my pump with insulin, I did a lot of testing for the first 72hrs because I was scared. My endo was able to make some few minor adjustments to my basal rates and even my ICR for meals..Breakfast I am 1:40 (But that is my most active time)..I have the paradigm minimed and I do not have the sensor..First, insurance wouldn't cover but medtronics would work with me BUT I think my own diligence in this is the best sensor. I test at least 7 times a day but there are days that I will test more depending on how I feel..

@Type 1 Gal..6mons into this..My entire lifestyle changed..(probably for the better in the long run) I really stick a very specific diet that works for me..I do not eat fried foods at all and stay away from processed meats. I stick 3-4 oz prot at each meal..If I do more, I end up with a spike at my 4hrs...I have been having issues at lunch time hitting close to 200 for past several days so, I think I need to increase my afternoon ICR to 1:30 (I have it at 1:33) in hopes my pre dinner would be a little higher and maybe decrease my lunch basal because my dinner pre is 70-80 and that is with an afternoon snack. It's all a big experiment of what works and I have really learned what works for one may not work for me. They told me I was insulin sensitive too and I am on a pump with Humulog. I was very sick on Novolog very sick and my requirements were way different than they are on Humulog.

Chills, fever, terrible epigastric pain with vomiting ... My sugars were easily 200 at 2hrs and the 60-80 at 3hrs..That roller coaster was exhausting... My pharmacist told me that Novolog does cause nausea and vomiting and can cause chills with fever..Then he tells me Novolog starts to peak at 52min and since my diagnosis, my digestive tract has slowed a bit. Humulog peaks at 75min so, somehow, it works better..When I told my endo all of that, he was all for trying the Humulog and I am telling you, I feel so much better and my sugars are so much more manageable and my requirements --especially ICR improved..

Just an update everyone, finally getting everything dialed in, and my endo agrees, my I:C is 1:6
