The only Diabetes *related medication I take is insulin.
Wondering if there are others out there like me? Please include the length of time you have lived with diabetes.
Type 1- 26 years
*Related- Anything to do with Diabetes including medications to control/prevent complications etc…
I have had T1 for 22 years, since I was 2.Well they think longer than that, but it took bringing me to 6 docs to get diagnosed.Any way all I take is insulin too.And as far as my doc and I can tell so far no complications.Hopefully it stays this way.
Hey Danny:
I’m with you thankfully. The only medication I’m on for or concerning Diabetes is Insulin. No IR either(Touch wood).
Complications:
-3-day Coma(age 19)(forgot my morning/day Insulin)
- Retinopathy in left eye(25)(repaired with laser)
-Memory loss(30)-(severe overdose of Insulin by a Nurse @hospital)-(gained most of my memories back)
-Neuropathy(40)(left foot)-(reversed by Better blood sugar control)
- Some Hypo/Hyper Unawareness(45)-still get some minor but different symptoms
*Type 1 for 48.5 years/ dxd. @ age 3—A1c 6.3 and 6.4(Last one was 5.3 but that was because of a Bad reaction to a drug for RA causing lows).
**Keep up your Good work Danny.
Same here…only diabetes-related meds are insulin. I’ve had Type 1 for 29 years (30 years this October).
I am LADA, diagnosed 3 years ago. I was initially misdiagnosed as Type 2 and was put on a combination of oral meds which worked for awhile; when they stopped working I was tried on several more meds most of which I can’t remember. Since realizing I was in fact Type 1 a year and a couple months ago, I’ve only been on insulin. I take other medications but they are for unrelated conditions. I lost 40 pounds with diagnosis and work on maintaining that weight loss and keeping my insulin use low so I don’t develop resistance.
I’m interested to hear the responses because I would have guessed that more of us are on just insulin for diabetes than on other diabetes meds!
Insulin only as well…T1 for 28 years and counting.
Now guess my age lol, and yes that’s me in my picture!
Been type 1 for just shy of 25 years. Up until 3 months ago, insulin was the only medication I was on for D.
I spilled an abnormal amount of microalbumin 6 months ago and on the 3 month follow-up so my endo put me on Lisinopril. My latest test showed my numbers were back to normal (0.2 mg/L spot urine test) but I told my endo I wanted to stay on the Lisinopril anyway. ACE inhibitors protect your kidneys and I’m on a low dose (10 mg/day) with no side effects, so I’ve decided that it’s something I want to continue. Another nice result is that my blood pressure has stabilized considerably. I never had high blood pressure, but there have been days where I’ve come home from work with a systolic BP in the 140s. Since I’ve been on Lisinopril, I’ve haven’t had a single reading over 120. When I woke up this morning, it was 95/50.
Generally, I avoid all types of medication unless situations are extreme. As I’ve gotten older, however, I’ve just decided that I’ll take any help I can get to keep my complications to a minimum.
I have been diabetic for 10 years and only take insulin.
Type 1- 11 years in January
Insulin is the only thing I take for the diabetes. Type 1 for 37 years. Loads of other meds for other things though.
T1 for 50 years and I only take insulin, though over the years it’s been NPH (from pigs and beef then genetically engineered); R then Humalog and today Novolog.
I also take 2 baby aspirins a day but only to keep a promise to my mother and one Sam Adams (for the same reason).
I’ve been Type 1 for 6 years this July 31 and only take insulin (Apidra w/ my omnipod). Thanks for your post it’s good to see how others are doing after so many years!
I also only take insulin, T1 for 47 years, never taken anything but insulin, now Novolog on a pump.
Close enough. I’m 31. I was Dx’d when I was 3. Not a bad guess (with help from the crystal ball of course!)
And actually I was 29 in that pic when it was taken in 2008!!
Danny : I am reading your question as in " controlling complications, NOT preventing complications right ??
Reason why I am asking : I take Ramipril for kidney protection …kidneys are A-one at last blood work .
I take thyroid med , cause I was told by my Oncologist , that my thyroid stopped working 10 years after having radiation in the area of the gland ( blood work was done) …
Oh , and I take Actonel for my osteoporosis …it has been claimed , that the D. is the culprit .
I am ( almost …7 more sleeps ) 70 years of age, living with D for almost 28 years and taking insulin.
I suppose I don’t really belong to this Group …I can delete my response with a flick of the finger …let me know …
Here too. Type 1, 10 years.
How can your doc know if you’re a diabetic with out testing? This is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard.Plus you cant just give insulin to someone who is possibly not a diabetic or who may not need it.It could be harmful not only to you but to your baby as well.PLEASE get a second opinion!
13 years T1 with only insulin here
lol Sam Adams and baby aspirin…what a combo!
I’m asking the same question as Crystal. How can the doc put you on insulin without doing any kind of tests? What if your not diabetic, and the synthetic insulin winds up harming your perfectly good insulin cells? I would ask for a second opinion! Diabetes is an auto immune disease, so that means your body kills your insulin producing cells. Most of the time this happens over a lot longer time than a couple of hours.
7 years T1- only insulin.
