Hello~
I have a D-Mom friend who was just told that her insurance no longer covers her daughter’s Animas PING pump supplies. she has about 2-3 weeks of supplies left, but was distraught after the phone call. Has this happened to anyone and do you have any recommendations how to handle it? They cannot afford to pay the out of pocket costs for the supplies.
Should she fight it, or should she try to switch to a different pump? Are there hardship assistance programs for pump supplies?
There are assistnace programs out there - but has she tried going through a DME supplier, rather than the company directly. Maybe it is that the insurance is not covering through Animas directly, but rather through a DME supplier such as Edgepark or any of the numerous companies out there. She should clarify this. Many insurers don’t cover supplies directly from the manufacturer but rather have a contract elsewhere.
My insurance company once made me prove that I STILL have type 1 diabetes (as if there was some cure that I didn’t know about!!).
I wonder if they said they won’t cover the pump supplies or only that they won’t cover Animas.
Also, it can matter where you order supplies from! I could not order directly from the company, but had to order through a company that my insurance company preferred. She should call the insurance company and find out what is going on. There must be a way to get coverage if she used to have it.
Hi, Kristin,
Thanks for the response. The Mom is looking into if the insurance will cover other pump supplies instead of Animas.
They did tell her she could get pump supplies from other companies, but she was under the impression she would have to pay for them. Perhaps this situation is similar to yours, and not being able to order through the company.
She is going to call the insurance…it’s just bad timing right before the weekend and everyone away from the desk.
Thanks!
Thanks Jennifer! I’m going to pass this along to the Mom.
Yes, I just had to order my supplies through a distributor that was “in network” rather than directly from the pump company, which was “out of network”. They were the same supplies and I had them covered 100%. Hope that this is the case for her as well!
