Kickin' DP's butt with the Omnipod! :)

My son started wearing the Omnipod a little over a month ago. He/we decided to start pumping because for months we were battling DP to no avail! We increased the Lantus which only caused overnight lows. We split the Lantus which just caused lows before lunch. Well, the first month went pretty good for him. Then, we met with his endo. on Friday and made some major adjustments to his basal settings. This picture shows what his CGM has looked like for the last five - FIVE - nights! I have no idea how long this will last (since he is in puberty) but I am going to enjoy it while it does. THANK YOU Omnipod!!

I too am a DP success story since being on OmniPod. The tweaks are ever-changing, but I have come a long way from 300-350 mornings to anywhere between 90-160, a now perfectly acceptable range. And it's done wonders for my quality of sleep not having to be up 10-15 times a night if you know what I mean.

So great to hear good news! Keep it up!

Hi there glad things are going well! would you mind sharing Kyles basal setting out of curiosity our boys are about the same age, and jacob has been running high in the morning lately i increased his 3a-7a but still mostly over 200 in the am, part of it is he is hungry all the time and having like three bed time snacks :( some of which are higher fat which he extends for...it has been a trying few weeks to be honest but i try to let him eat mostly what he wants hungry is hungry i will send you his basals too i am just to lazy to get off my butt and get them, they are alot higher during the overnight than the day i think his 11-3 am is something like 1.1 and 3-7 just went from 1.15 to 1.25 his day times are from .60-.80. hope things keep going well for you guys! amy

Good for you! That’s exciting news

I still struggle with DP a lot but for me it’s often so sporadic that it’s tough to nail down a solution. A lot of times it’ll be with a snack before bed. But the most consistent morning highs come from being low in the middle of the night, taking some glucose tabs or juice (only 15g!!) and then waking up with sugars in the high 200s. I’ve never quite understood that or a good way to combat it. I wonder if anyone has had success fighting this specific occurence or an idea about this? Doesn’t make much sense to me to give a dose to cover the carbs I’m eating to fix a low…

YAY!

When I used to give my son a snack in the middle of the night (for a low) I couldn't give him more than 6-8 carbs or he would go above 200 also. I would usually give him 2 vanilla wafers -best way to bring him up and keep him there that I found. :) We have never been able to treat a low with more than 10-12 carbs (even at 65) or he will go over 150 within 30-40 min. I don't think that "15 rule" applies to everyone ... sure doesn't with my son.

Hmm good thoughts. I’ll definitely have to give that a try. There are times I need to do the 15/wait 15 cycle for an hour before my sugar is in range… Then I’m really in for some high BGs later in the day/night. It can really be a mess sometimes. But I do notice my sugar rises quicker in the middle of the night so I’ll definitely try half the carbs and see if it makes a difference. Thanks!

Interestingly enough (at least I find it interesting) is that he used to get 19 units of Lantus every night and with his current basal setting he is getting 19.85 units every day. It's just the timing that's different.

OK, now my son had a problem with late evening lows, slight rising after midnight, big rise around 4 a.m. SO, here are his basal settings with that in mind:

12-2 a.m. = .75
2-4 a.m. = 1.00
4-6 a.m. = 1.10
6-9 a.m. = .90
9-12:30 = .75
12:30-2:30 = .80
2:30- p.m = .75
6-10 p.m. = .80
10-midnight = .70

IF you aren't crazy low, try to wait 20-25 min. before you test. That's about how long it takes my son to respond to a snack (unless it's a glucose tab and then it's faster).

Also something I’ll keep in mind. I almost always make it a glucose tab or juice, so it is generally gonna be a bit quicker, but I’m always pretty impatient/ornery when I’m low… :stuck_out_tongue: my girlfriend does a good job of keeping me in line though!

thanks for taking the time to post they are pretty close jacobs total basal is 19! but he gets a bit more a night less during the day.... always a work in progress just when i was going to tweek again he had a 120 this morning, he has a doc apt in a few weeks so that is good, sadly i suspect his a1c is definitely up from last time but alot of his highs were pump related so we'll see i try not to get to caught up in his a1c as long as i know the effort put in by all is good he is always somewhere in the 7's which is good someday when he is a grown up and done with all this growing nonsense i think he will join the 6 club, he is planning on being an engineer so i suspect his diabetes management skills will bypass mine someday, my goal is to educate without pressure so he will not burn out! anyways thanks again for posting and i hope things keep going well, if you run into any bumps please ask away, nobody gets this like we all do, this site is so great for info and support. talk soon, amy

My son has been accepted into the Engineering Academy at our local high school for next year (can't believe he starts HS next year). Sounds like our boys have a few things in common. :)

When do you see the biggest rise? Our CDE said you have to be ahead of the rise. So if his biggest rise is at 3:00 then you need to set the basal higher at 2 or 2:30. I was nervous about my son dropping before that, but it seemed to work just like she said it would (well, for now anyway). I'm with you, I'm done with all this growing nonsense. LOL

the problem with jacob is he never wanted a CGM and he hates it when i test him overnight, i did test him once last week at 2 am i believe he had a fresh pod on and he stayed flat all night! he actually had three mornings this week under 200 105-168 so i'm going to wait and see before more adjustments, i will get in one or two more overnight checks before his endo visit towards the end of the month, he has been more active lately which is helping! i am proud of his choices lately, he is now testing in the caf. at lunch rather than the nurse and bolusing in front of his friends, and he hasnt played x box all week, helping his grandmother with yardwork and playing b ball out front must better for his bs! i do think the boys have some things in common, jacob is a freshman at a tech hs in the drafting program, he loves it and is having such a great year academically and socially meeting some great compassionate like minded kids! yeah. talk soon! amy

Do you think he would wear one for a week?? You can ask your endo. for one to wear for a week just to see what his numbers look like at night so you can make basal adjustments. That's how we got hooked! Kyle relied on it so much that week that he decided he wanted one. I'm not sure which has made his life more "normal" now ... the CGM and the pump are running a close race! ;)

Have a great weekend.

you know that is a great idea, with summer coming he might be willing to try it while not at school, i think he never wanted another gadget to carry or possibly god forbid beep at school! i see some parents here totally live there childs life by their CGM although they are very helpful, i never really wanted him to feel like he had to be checking that number 24/7 so the trial my be a great idea to see some hidden trends without a serious commitment, great idea! thanks!

Also, the CGM can be set to vibrate so there are no beeps at all. AND my son turns the "high" alert off completely while he's at school (no beep or vibrate). The only time that it will ALWAYS alarm is if it drops below 50 (or 55) ... and you would want it to alarm then! My son keeps it in his pocket. I see him check it every now and then, but usually I have to ask him how he's doing.

He's in his room right now playing video games with a friend. I walked in his room, picked up the CGM just to check where he is post meal/lunch and walked back out. VERY nice.

your selling me! now for jacob, i definitely think a trial is worth it and see what he thinks win win situation i guess. have a good week! amy
