Lantus Users: i have a question for you

okay so ive just started on Lantus(long term) and Apidra (short term)

i gave myself a shot of Lantus before i went to bed but i stayed up since this is the first time ive used this insulin.

now 4 hours later im still awake and ive been noticing that my heart seems to be having an irregular beat it seems to be normal then it kind of does an extra like twitch-like tone.

also i feel that i should mention i used to be an insulin pump user using Novolog but now im using syringes with Apidra and Lantus. as well as i have no medical insurance to assist me to go to the doctor which puts me in this bind.

now im not for sure its the insulin.
i have been warned not to drink caffeinated drinks and i quit the energy drinks but i still drink diet sodas

anyone have any similar reactions?

I take 20u of Lantis and have never had a problem falling asleep, but thats just me. Can you just call the Dr. and report your symptoms and see if they think it may be related? I feel for each of you with out insurance, I know since I have been DX in June 08 I have spent and extra $100 a month in copays, I can’t imagine the real full price!?!?!

yep i have no insurance.
a box of supplies for the pump was $900 ( a 3-month supply)
and insulin was $118 (1 vial)

David,

I agree with Marnie that you might be able to call the Dr. Sometimes, the Dr. will talk to you over the phone, and then you don’t have to pay for an office visit. If you do get him or her on the phone, ask about your symptoms and specifically if you need to be seen. At least that way you have a better idea of whether you are facing something serious, or if you can just kind of ignore it.

BTW, I feel you when it comes to no insurance. This disease royally sucks when it’s all out of pocket…

Oh, gah, no insurance is awful. Once, when I started a new job, I had to wait 6 months for insurance to start – I went into a massive amount of debt waiting (then got fired for getting low at work after 5.5 months).

Anyway, I’ve never noticed that problem with Lantus (been on it about 6 months). I’m assuming you tested? My heart always beats fast when I’m low. Are you sure you’re not just being paranoid about your heart? (I’m not calling you crazy, I just know that my heart has started beating up since I read this post, and now I’m kind of worried).

Also, is there a free clinic or something that comps people without insurance? I know hospitals are required to help people regardless of their ability to pay, so you could try the ER if you’re really worried.

nix the er unless you want high doc bills, it’s good only if your dying. And since we are the living dead… it’s pointless. My last er bill was 800 and 300 for the doc! that’s 1100 i haven’t seen those numbers in my bank for a couple years now. geesh. Maybe it’s not the lantus maybe it’s your sugar or the stress of not being able to sleep.

yeah it might be that i was up for 26 hours for the past two days.
yeah im reluctant to go to the ER and Doctor unless i have lost complete control, my friends would take me. but thats last resort for me im still recovering from losing my job and insurance after evacuating from the Hurricanes in New Orleans
yeah im thinking i drink way too much caffiene

and yes ANNA MARTIN there was a free clinic that i went to and they gave me Lantus and Apidra and told me to do the shots versus the novolog and the pump.
with the pump i had low blood sugar every morning id be so disoriented when i awoke i told my friends to give me my glucose tablets and a juice box to help me come out of it
so luckily i live with friends now while im recovering from all the mess

yeah it burns like a mother

yeah i always felt like that NEEDY people who Need the medicine are unfortunate to pay all of these ridiculous costs. the thing is we have to have it so i feel we as diabetics get loaded with costs. we have no choice

I took Lantus and Apidra every day an I never have this problem. I take my Lantus in the morning at 7 o’clock. I take 9 units of Lantus and it’s a small shot. Yes supplies are very expensive and there is nothing made in my country, Lantus and Apidra are made in Germany and my others things (glucose meter…) are made in USA!

i have 52 units of lantus and i am fine (been on it for 2 years now. Switched from protaphane and it hasnt made a difference) and omg here in australia i only pay $5.50AU for my insulin

I’m around 50 U of Lantus/day and I’ve not had any adverse reactions either.
