I wasn’t even thinking and just took my morning dose of levemir instead of bedtime. I take 40 units in the morning and 10 at night. HUGE mistake! Now normally I wake up with highs anyways (in the high 200s-300) so I definitely was due for an adjustment but I feel like this was a bit much. Any advice? I’m really scared
Oops😂
Breathe, you are gonna be fine. But maybe not well rested tomorrow😉
I would try to eat so that your bg goes up to the 200s if it isnt there already. That gives some cushion. If you don’t have a cgm then i would suggest to set an alarm clock for about every 1-2 hrs. Check, and if you have gone under 200 by then, eat yourself up again. I know not much fun but this should keep you away from the lows. If possible tell someone in your household or a neighbor, so that they are aware of it and could react if you didnt get up in the morning. But i think with the protocol above you should be fine!
Thank you so much. I’m currently drinking regular Pepsi and trying to stop panicking. I’ve never messed my levemir dose up but I’ve taken my novolog instead of levemir by mistake once. That sucked. This is far better I think haha. I once got so low I couldn’t see anymore and that put the fear of God in me. I’m thinking levemir wouldn’t be as rapid since it’s a long acting insulin though?
((((hugs)))) Try not to panic. Keep testing and drinking soda to keep yourself high. Can you call your doctor/endo on an emergency line call for advice? You can always go to the er if you need to. Tell someone if you live alone so they can help you if need be.
Yes, it would probably be a lot worse if you took the novolog… I did that once which was a huge dose for me. I drank a bunch of OJ and people here helped me. I would probably also eat some protein and fat at some point because that will help keep you stable too.
It wont be as rapid, but levemir works the entire night and maybe even the next morning.
Dont panick, just test often and keep yourself away from the low numbers. Fluid carbs is always a good idea if you know youll have to consume a lot.
Killing yourself with insulin is extremely difficult and requres a lot more than 40 units (just saying that to try keeping you calm, it is true but not really relevant in this situation)
Thank you so much! I called the endo and their advice was just to test throughout the night. Not much can be done I suppose. Good thing this is the first night in like a month that my 1 year old is sleeping well. Grrrr kicking myself right now.
i would definitely go on meee´s advice and try to call an emergency line/doc.
I would also get up to about 200 and sleep but i wouldnt check nearly as often, as levemir is a slowacting insulin which doesnt reach its peak for about 4 hours. so its going to lower you, but slowly. maybe every three hours.
You got this… Rent some good movies on Netflix, get comfortable, and stay up late. Test every hour or so. I wouldn’t even try to elevate my numbers expecially just maintain them. It’s just basal it’s not going to nosedive you, especially if you’re not being super active. Main problem is you’ll have a sleepless night. You’re right if it was novolog instead you’d be in a much sketchier situation. You’ve got this under control.
I’m glad you got in touch with your doctor… don’t worry you’re going to be ok. When I made the novolog error, after drinking a huge amount of OJ, people here told me to eat a sandwich with protein or something like that as well and it did help me. Just keep testing and stay up till you know you’re in the clear. Don’t be afraid to get help if you think you need it. You may need to reduce all your insulin dosing tomorrow and keep an eye on things till things get back to normal.
You guys are awesome! I feel so much more relaxed. Thank you for all the love and support. When do you think I would be in the clear? I’m thinking of setting alarms for every hour or less so I can get some sleep so I’m not absolute garbage tomorrow. Im at hour 2 since the dose. I drank a glass of regular soda and my blood sugar is currently 238
I’m glad you feel better… just in case I would set it for every hour, but try to stay up maybe till the four hour point at first because that tends to be when it starts to drop you more. Sometimes it dropped me right away but I’m super insulin sensitive at times and tend to fluctuate a lot, prolly not the norm for most people.
So far so good. I’m still sort of insulin resistant from pregnancy so it may not effect me as badly as I’m anticipating. Levemir isn’t that effective on me these days. I was taking tresiba for a while and that works great! I’m waiting for my insurance to approve it
That’s good you’re more resistant because it probably won’t drop you too much… I hope you get the tresiba soon. Or maybe consider a pump at some point because you won’t have to worry about varying long acting doses and fast acting doses etc.
Don’t over react with the sugar. The fact that your fasting is normal in the 200s gives you a pretty good buffer (well a buffer of 120+ points). Overdosing on levermir is not such a big deal, as it acts pretty slowly. I take levemir. If I did such a thing, I’d probably just check blood sugar every 3 hours and take a small snack of protein and fat, and maybe a little carbs to push it up if it looked like it was going lower than I wanted.
on the other hand, I have taken my rapid acting in place of the slow acting. 20 units of short acting instead of 20 units of long acting, when I typically only take 2 - 3 units at a time of short acting. That was a sit up for 6 hours drinking lots of sweet tea moment.
You will be fine!
Eek I’ve done the same thing! It was a very long night. I did not want to see orange juice again. Thank you for the encouragement. I’ve got alarms set and I’ve been dosing off and on. I’m on hour 3 and blood sugars are still okay
That’s great! I would be more cautious in your case because of the difference between the night time and the morning dose.
I think it’s a rule somewhere that everyone on MDI has to do that at least once. Fortunately I was dosing in the a.m. when I was on it, no split dose, and I realized before I’d shot the entire 50 units I’d dialed up on my injector pen. Made for an interesting day though.
@Kayla9 how are you doing today? (((BigHugs)))
Hey everyone! Thank you so much for all the quick replies and support! I made it through the night just fine. I only had one low and I caught it at 61 so it was easy to treat. It didn’t effect me that badly so that is a huge relief. I will definitely be paying better attention next time!!!
There is a lesson to be learned here (aside from the obvious one of “be careful with insulin”, LOL).
You handled this. You got on top of it when it happened, sought assistance and advice, did the right things and took care of it without serious trouble. Don’t neglect to acknowledge yourself for doing that! And the next time an unexpected problem rears its head, remember how capably you managed this one.
