I am still very new to this whole life style change. What testing meter for BG is the easiest to buy supplies for on the fly. I am business traveler that with little to no notice can be told to be in a remote part of the world for 3 to 4 weeks. I have a Contour USB but it is damn hard to find test strips without ordering online. I want a back up meter that I can buy supplies for at a Walmart or Target or a Big Box store. Any suggestions would be great. I hope everyone has had a good weekend.
The Relion Prime meter from Walmart is considered both reasonably accurate and inexpensive.
Yikes, please tell me that "remote parts of the world" don't all have Target, Walmart or "Big Box Stores"!!! My experience living in Guatemala was that most pharmacies would carry the major brands of test strips though I did buy a Contour meter there because those strips seemed to be more reliably available than the Accu-chek I'd been using. I would advise getting 2 or 3 of the major brands to up your chance of finding strips. Another option is just to be vigilant on keeping ahead of your supply of test strips and perhaps have a travel stash, so when you are whisked away you can just pick up your stash and off you go! That's what I'd do if I was lucky enough to travel a lot.
thanks Brian and Zoe. Yes my plan is to buy a larger stash. The part of the world I will be in will not have a Walmart they haven't gotten there yet :). I am less than a month into my new lifestyle and didn't realize I would test so often to understand how foods are affecting me.
So I ran out and bought the one touch ultra mini and a 100 strips. I now have my contour usb and a one touch. Crazy thing the Ultra Mini is testing 30 points lower than the contour. I tested with both machines twice and get same results. I tried control solution and both machines are within the solution limits. Weird.
Yes, testing more in the early days is a great source of information regarding how your body responds. But I pretty much think that the more I test the better I do even longer into the whole thing. experience living in Latin America was also that supplies often had to be ordered so I learned to keep ahead of myself on when I needed meds. The larger the city the less of an issue this is.
Hi there - I have used lots of different BG tests kits. They do have different readings. I just stick to a CGM now, but with a back manual kit. Both use the same strip.

I have an ultra mini and test bg after I get blood tests at the lab done and it was pretty darn close to the labs. I’ve never used any other meter other than one touch.
Thanks Everyone.
