Lowering my meal carbs equaled ketones :(

I am trying to handle those post meal spikes a bit better. Since I have to intake so many carbs I decided to cut them back at meals to 50 instead of 80 and make them up in little snacks. I did help my post meal spikes but for the 2 weeks I tried I ended up with ketones and some large for hours on and off the whole time. 2 days ago I went back to my 80 carb meals and they are gone. I have Dr. B’s book and all but it seems if I restrict the “bad” ones I get pretty sick. I really don’t know what to do except start taking my insulin earlier but I am afraid if I do that I may not digest because of the Cystic Fibrosis. When I do not digest even juice may not bring me up. Do you think starting with 10 minutes before would be a good place to start. The docs have left it up to me I understand the risk and possible benefits. Because of the CF I can not take any meds that slow absorption. The option is to continue to live with meal spikes or take my insulin early and keep my fingers crossed

If those where your options which one would you pick?

Hi Laura
This may be a foolish question, but are you getting digestive enzymes? I mean suplements? Not the acidophyllis and bacteria like that in yogurt and things, but real digestive enzymes supplements. And I think it would be a good idea to check with your endo, but for you it may be a bad idea to cut calories or carbs. In the presence of Cystic Fibrosis, I think it would not be a good idea to follow Dr. B’s book. How do you feel about shooting 10 minutes early? You sure don’t want to get caught and not eat on time. I think I would keep some injectable glucagon with me all the time. And maybe keep the gel or little shots (little bottles of liquid) instead of the glucose tablets that require chewing and swallowing.
You could try the 10 minutes early or just do 5 minutes early and see if that covers you. If it doesn’t work out then the meal spikes is your next idea. I wish you well My first choice would be the carbs and calories back and the meal spikes
Big loving hugs to you. .

Yep I take Viokase (prescribed digestive enzymes) 60% of all my calories have to come from carbs and about half of that from simple ones or I drop weight so bad that I end up on feeding tubes. Dr. B’s book while I love it is just not going to work for me so your right I just wanted to try a way to help with my spikes. I thought wrongly if I just reduced but spread it out more I could make it work but it seems like I need 75-80 grams and no matter how high my post spike is no ketones. Less and even if I am normal ketones.

I guess I am scared of injecting early but I think I will take your idea and try 5 minutes first and go out from there. I keep frosting tubes around the little ones that get absorbed in the mouth because of the issue with digestion. there good to. I have never been able to break the high 7 A1C and my Endo’s are sure that is because of the 2 hours after each meal I am high. I also have to get up in the middle of the night and eat or I wake with large ketones and pretty sick. I am not complaining I have a blessed life I just wonder I can use your idea’s as well as others for idea’s I have not thought of. Maybe it is just hard for me to accept I have to choose the spikes or wait for the time I don’t digest which is scary for my whole family. I promise I hold the record. 3 Bananas, ensure, 8oz OJ and frosting and my BG did not budge from 42 had to take glucagon oh the joy! Lucky for me I have such a good family I just don’t like to see them so worried and scared.
Thank you

Thanks Robert I know you also have many different health issues like me. It seems mine are opposed to each other what is good for one is bad for another. I would love one day just to have an A1C below 7.5. I have tested for 12 years never cheated and never skipped insulin. Never have I blown off my diabetes and it just sometimes seems like it is a no win situation for me. So I come here and listen to all of you. The biggest problem for me is I have no stored carbs or anything else. If I go 5 hours without eating it would be like a normal person going a full 24 hours without food. I use up what I eat fast. But there is a good side I pretty much don’t ever have to buy new clothes :stuck_out_tongue: same my whole adult life except when they get a bit big. I don’t think I can ever go “out of style” as when the new stuff comes around I still have the original!
Pretty cool huh?
Be loved Robert you are I promise

Hey Laura!
Back before I got on a healthy diet kick, my endo had me take my insulin 15 minutes before I ate. That seemed to work well. Now I eat healthier I don’t have to do that, unless I am starting my meal with a high blood sugar, then I take my insulin early to let the correction have time to start working.

CF doesn’t affect how fast insulin or carbs absorb. Just fats and sometimes proteins (which usually come hand-in-hand, so it doesn’t really matter). Also like Type 1s, the absorption of carbs could be slowed if we take them with fat or protein. Just remember that high blood sugar levels will dehydrate you which will cause more lung infections and also slow down your digestion since there is less water to move things along.

Have you tried other enzymes? Maybe there is a different brand that may work better for you. Avoid generic at ALL costs. I looked up Viokase and it has an inactive ingredient of lactose… any chance you are lactose intolerant? Also, all your digestion issues has me wondering about wheat gluten too.

I think of you often!
hugs!

Hi Lady it’s been a while
No lactose problems they are checking for gluten problems now although in the past I have not had them.
I did look at my bottle of Viokase and guess what it is generic ugh! I called they are filling the Viokase tomorrow.
I am trying the 5 min ahead I am scared though because sometimes nothing hits my blood sugar no matter what. They re tested my pancreas still not working so it is not that. It is just every time I time I try to increase protein or fat I run into such problems with BG and ketones. But for now to give my stomach a rest I am eating the more simple foods and working on covering them, At least the ketones are gone and I don’t have to get IV’s anymore. My salt is at the lowest normal but normal anyway.

I cut out the other proteins and fat I added and now my electrolyte’s are finally normal again. Well all low normal but normal. I went back to eating cereal and yogurt before bed like I used to and my fasting came back down so that is good.

I don’t have to worry about dehydration unless my sugar is out of control for a while. I drink 3 liters of electrolyte water everyday and eat salt all day so I really have to run high for a long time.

I am gonna try some different stuff after I get control back of my BG. btw the almonds are helping I can a few throughout the day thank you
