Mom starting Tresiba tomorrow ( UPDATE , 8/22/16)

Hi,

My mother will be starting Tresiba tomorrow. I read that it stays active in your system for about 42 hours but then wouldn’t it overlap with the Lantus which is already in her system? She takes Lantus as her basal ( 13 units am and 12 for pm). I wasn’t expecting her insurance to cover it so I was willing to pay out of pocket for it. However, the look on the pharmacist face and mine… as we realized insurance did cover it …was lol, quite amusing.

I didn’t encounter any problems with overlap or stacking when transitioning from lantus. I’d recommend just simply taking the full 25u dose in the evening and watching it closely. Adjustments will likely be needed but give it a good 3-5 days before you change anything.

Ps my doc now prescribes pretty much everyone the u200— the pro is that you inject less total fluid, the con is that it limits you to even number of units eg 24 or 26 instead of 25… I’ll be switching to u200 when my u100 runs out.

Re Insurance coverage-- I didn’t encounter any troubles either. I suspect over the next few years it will become pretty standard. It’s made by novo nordisk, so it’s not like it’s some ma and pa company trying to break into the marketplace. They know what they’re doing…

I’m hoping their new faster Novolog gets the same consideration from insurance. I’ve been using Apidra, but, even though it works around the same for me, albeit with a shorter tail (which I like), Novolog is a lot more comfortable for me - almost no irritation.

Good luck @Tinsyl to your mom with Tresiba! From what I’e seen, most people are quite pleased with the results they get from it.

I just started Tresiba also and I didn’t notice any overlap either. I started a few units lower but it would have been better just to match doses and switch straight over looking back. I’m at the exact same dose as Toujeo. I really haven’t seen much difference between Toujeo and Tresiba for me. It’s been like 5 days so I’m still evaluating it.

What is this about fast acting Novolog? It’s a good thing I come to this site or I wouldn’t know anything about what’s new coming out.

Been in the works for a while - I think they’ve applied for or are about to apply for FDA approval… From a look some time back at their R&D site, they’ve got another even faster version somewhere in the development, too.

yes, I second! Is this faster than Novolog? Or just that Novolog is already “fast-acting”?

It’s supposed to be faster than the current Novolog. GlobeNewswire

Thanks for the info Thas. I’m excited to try Afrezza if I can ever get my Dr to prescribe it but it’s good to know there other alternatives coming down the pipe.
