My 5 1/2 yo daughter

Her hba1c has increased from 5.1 last May to 5.6 yesterday.

We had kind of been ignoring this, though we try to eat healthy and avoid refined carbs. I haven't been testing her blood sugars; fasting and post-eating. She is very slim and quite physically active.

But this increase is too much to ignore, I think? Maybe she has a slow onset diabetes, despite her age....

My heart is hurting for her at what she is probably facing (taking after Mummy, I am afraid).

So sorry to hear you're having to deal with this worry. Is there any way you can get an endo to order antibody testing? That info could help you determine whether you're dealing with the beginning phases of T1. Knowledge is power when dealing with the D.

The pedia endo we saw 6 months ago said antibody tests are not useful. Said they can change over time.

She is looking at the fact that I am diabetic and hypothyroid (ie. probably autoimmune), plus my daughter is already celiac. She said possibly early Type 1, but the plan is just to monitor.. didn't even encourage me to modify her diet....

Guess that is going to change if this keeps progressing. :(

5.6 is still in a "normal" persons fluctuation range in A1c levels though. So not really a concern yet though unless it carries on up. Tomorrow will be what tomorrow is, might as well not worry about it unless it actually happens.
