Wonderful! Congratulations on a complication free life. When my son was diagnosed about 18 months ago, all I could think about was a young woman in our community who died in her 40’s from complications of type 1. I knew she spent years in denial but her story scared me badly. Your story gives me hope that he will live as healthy a life as you. Thanks
Michele
I am so proud of you! You are truly an inspiration to me!! Congrats on 65 years, with many more to come!
congratulations! that’s awesome!!! a true inspiration to me!!
Congrats Richard! you are a great inspiration to all type 1"s!
Wow, your 65 years is amazing and impressive with no complications. Happy Anniversary, if you like it said that way.
Not so good genes to get diabetes in the first place! I suspect good behavior and congratulate you for your achievement! You deserve to be called a “Medalist.” Are you part of that study? Next year will make 30 years for me and I am fortunate, like you, to have avoided complications to date. I was also lucky not to have developed the disease until I was nearly 28 years old. It is a great accomplishment to have gone through childhood, adolescence, etc without having succumbed to revolt, despair or other feelings/behaviors that might derail control that is good enough to avoid complications. Bravo! Bob
Thank you friends! I am so fortunate to have such good health, after all these years. I enjoy inspiring other diabetics and giving them hope for their futures. My book (published in March) has done well in that respect.
Bob, I participated in the Joslin Medalist Study in Dec. of 2009. It was an interesting experience.
Spring, your daughter is now 18. I hope she is taking good care of herself. I had some mild retinopathy and neuropathy several years ago, even though my A1c was consistently below 6.0. It takes more than a good A1c to avoid complications long-term. I started pumping in 2007 and a few months later I stopped having so many highs and lows. The more stable control has eliminated the symptoms I had been having. Now I am complication-free. If your daughter has a high A1c and/or she has many highs and lows then I recommend she use an insulin pump, but only if she wants to and she approaches pumping enthusiastically.
Amazing. Happy bithday for both the (9th and the 15th)!
What an amazing anniversary. Definitely an inspiration to other people living with T1. Thanks for sharing this!
Wow that is amazing! What a great story, and Happy 65th!
As I’ve said before: “You are Amazing Richard”. You’ve done Great work.
***Congratulations on Successfully Living With Diabetes for 65 Years and Enjoying Life!!!*** You Da Man!!
***Happy Birthday!!!*** also.
Wishing you many more Good Years ahead.
Congratulations, Richard. Good genes or not, you’re a shining example, our beacon!
To say congratulations is an understatement.
I think a Thankyou is more appropriate, for setting a fine example.
My mother has had T2 for 25 years, shots for 15 years, and no real complications.
My best friend is 50 yo and diagnosed T1 at 2 yo. He has the beginnings of all the major complications.
Again, Thankyou, for showing (leading) the way.
Richard, you are truely an inspiration. Thanks for giving us moms of type 1 children the hope we need to hold on to…congrats and hope you have many more years of no complications :o)
Congratulations!!! You are for sure one role model and hope for the rest of us.
WOW! So many wonderful messages. Thank you so very much!!!
Congratulations Richard!

Thanks for participating in the Joslin study, I’m sure the tests were not always fun. I look forward to the results in April, as I think they could lead to helping all PWDs. And congratulations on your diagnosis anniversary!
Congratulations! You give us all so much hope and inspiration!
