My dad fell

Saturday I went to my great niece’s 1st birthday party. It was in a backyard with a pool and lots of landscaping rock. We started singing happy birthday and then heard a shout and a “crack”. My dad fell trying to walk down the steps. He rolled and hit his left side on a huge boulder. He broke his hip and had surgery last night. Hes 87 years old and very alert and oriented. But after surgery last night he didn’t know what had happened and kept asking me why they froze him. It would have been funny but was also scary. We’re hoping the confusion is from the anesthesia and will wear off. Has anybody else had this happen to themself or their loved one?

My g-father done the samething. It was from the anesthesia. I’ll keep him in my prayers.

Yes, my father had an episode of a-rhythmic heart beats (later got a pacemaker) while driving. He was rushed to the hospital and was so confused. He kept asking " But, what happened?" We would tell him and he would ask again. It just took time for him to get back to comprehending. At the time we were all scared but just patiently answered his questions… He survived for several years… Once he asked me to “not buy any batteries for his pacemaker at a garage sale” . He always made me laugh. He’s been dead for 15 years now, and I miss him everyday.

I have bad reactions to anesthesia. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I was loopy for an entire day & was only in my 20’s. My boyfriend said he should have taped the wacky things I said.

Hope your dad is better soon!

I’ve heard of this confusion before too - The trauma from the fall and the anesthesia can cause confusion. I pray your dad is feeling better soon - and you too.

Hope your dad is better and more aware.
Anesthesia does a variety of things to different people. I pray that he gets better.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. My dad’s mental status cleared today and he’s doing much better. But he has an elevated BG 158 which has never happened before. MD thinks it’s from all the IV fluids and I sure hope so. They gave him insulin before dinner tonight. It was weird to see someone else besides me worrying about BGs for a change.

Happy he’s doing well & hope he’ll be home soon.

Any trauma to the body (the fall, pain, surgery, anesthesia, meds) can cause BG to rise some. I’m assuming from what you said he’s not a diabetic. There’s a lot of glucose in IVs, of course, but this doesn’t effect a non-diabetic. Hope his BG is back to normal.

Hi Gerri, No he’s not a diabetic. They are running an A1c to make sure this is just a stress response. Thanks for the kind words.
